Has anyone ever burned these? I think they were discussed here recently and I may have started the discussion but I have severe CRS as I get older. I was driving by the local feed store today and a sign caught my eye. Granulco Pellets, $199 picked up, $3.98/bag. I don't normally pay attention to their pellet prices because they are always too high. This just happened to catch my eye. I plan on picking up a couple bags tomorrow to try, but I suspect (I don't know why) they will be ashy with moderate heat.
Look in the decisions, decisions thread. ivanhoe burned them and said they were good. Never seen them around here. Hope you like them, the price is right.
I did a "Bing" search. Got a quote from 2011 on another forum. "They are a Spruce / Balsam Fir mix out of Quebec, and are rated @ 8400BTU. " They said the ash was about "normal". Said they got them at Agway.
Don't see em down yonder much. But did well when I tried them. Decent heat, average ash. Not a shoulder. But its been a long while since I've seen them. Worth a few try ers for a lookie see!! Nice price!! Keep us posted on your thoughts.
I bought a bag today to try. 2 women working at the place said they are a softwood with low ash. The bag doesn't say what they are other than 100% wood. They aren't blondies, they look more like the MWP softwoods. This place is less than a half mile from me so I can pick up a bunch in a short time if they turn out to be decent.
Pretty sure they are a full softy. I looked for a website but it looks to be down. And they also mention a fire at the mill last november. Granulco - Sacré-Coeur, Québec I read this article some time back. Had some info on the mill IIRC. Dusting Off Profits Here an article on the mill fire. You will need to translate!! Sad seeing whole pallets of pellets going poof!! Incendie majeur chez Granulco à Sacré-Coeur
Other sites list it as Spruce/Balsam Fir mix....Weird the site is down, wonder if the closed up shop? Could explain the cheap pellets too.
Might call that number and see if its still in service. They could be ramping back up after the fire and trying to tip the market. I'd still jump on some. Can't be worser than some of the crap(Penningtons) floating about. Edit: I got some of the best prices on Hamers after they had their fire in 2008. The very next spring the had a better price than comparable brands. Not sure why, But maybe to ease the fear from the revamped mill start up?
I want to say i burned half a ton of those the year of the shortage. It was a random brand pd got in so i snatched up half a ton as no one had anything. They burned well if i remember. I would have to search the other place.
I wanna say they burned pretty close to LG's, But its been since the 2011/12 season for me. Maybe just a bit more ash IIRC??? I didn't post a review as they weren't a local pellet. A bud who treks to CA. Brought em back and I never have seen them locally. Still diggin in the old notes and Nada. I might not have saved it! and CRS!! daffonce how would you compare to LG's or another?? I remember I liked them better than the McFeeters and Boundry Bays I burned about the say time frame is about all..........
Think i burned em right after oakie plats and my memort tells me that there wasnt mich difference. I would agree close to an lg both are eatern canadian softwood i believe.
I will tell you this, if i could get tons at $199 there would be 4 tons outside and not 3.6 of spruce pointes i bought at $239 a ton.
I burned my 1 bag today, so here's my thoughts Very thick bag. Might be the thickest I've seen. These are rated at 8400 BTU, and I'd say that is about right. Much larger fire than some of the high octane softies when burning at higher heat settings. Pellets range from bits and pieces to some 2" or more. I didn't see a lot of fines. Ash is moderate. I did some research last night and came across a lab test from 2011 or 12 which has an ash content of .57%. I'm not sure it's quite that high but it's closer to .5 than it is to .25. I also found that they're a spruce/balsam mix like Steve did. I believe Ivanhoe stated they better than a shoulder pellet. I'm not so sure I agree with that. They a decent pellet at a decent price. A high end shoulder pellet so to speak. I went back to the store today to buy a ton. So of course they were all out. I did mange to get 10 bags. I talked with the asst. manger for a few minutes. He's trying to get more in. They have, or had, 300 tons company wide that they're trying to get rid of. He took my name and number and says he'll call me tomorrow to let me know.
