While some of you guys are 12 month a year firewood guys who are on here posting away I (sadly) let this site slip away from me during the summer months. Well, it’s burning season and things are slowing down with work and General summer craziness so I’m back and happy to be. I may have been gone for 6 months but all the fine folks here at FHC are never forgotten, wonder group of hoarders! Will give you guys a little update and picture tour. So, my son is now 13 months and running around like a maniac. I knew I had to protect him from the woodstove this winter so I bought a baby gate made for that but it was absolute garbage and was sent back the next day. Had a little time last week and knew I could make something much more sturdy and better looking. Enter baby gate 3000, I could have a dance party on it and she would hold. Whole thing can be put up and taken down in 30 seconds. I originally had thought of a swing out gate for loading the stove but went with one that slides in and out, saves space and was easier to make. So once that was done I needed to move some wood up to the deck for the season. I went to my 4 year old ash. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s gonna be as primo as 4 year old wood should be. First I stacked it in double rows on pallets and they kind of collapsed into each other so air flow was restricted. Second I never top covered it and third there was lots of leaves and junk in between rows which holds a lot of moisture. Split a few pieces and am getting MM readings form 11-17 so there is some dry stuff in there but also some pretty wet stuff. Oh well, live and learn. I just don’t have room to do all single stacks.
So here’s what I got brought up and what I have on deck to be split and replace about half of what I’ll use this winter. Finally after all this work I needed a frosty beverage. Having a 13 month at home means I don’t go out much anymore so I had to bring the party to me. Got this old kegerator for free from a neighbor and have put three 1/2 kegs through it since May. Needless to say, I have friends and family stopping over quite a bit more often nowadays.
Great to be back in “the family”. I’ll toast one for everyone tonight. Stay warm(its 53 here tonight).
NICE, we had similar around the woodstove at previous home, not only hot enough to burn a lil one, but even when cold the corners are sharp and unforgiving. Here we used the cheap plastic play yards, yep, ugly and garbage but they did the job.
I fail to understand about the double rows on pallets not drying. Also, why would 4 year old wood not be primo? Perhaps there is something else you are doing wrong with the stacking or handling of the wood? fwiw, we normally triple row ours and many times much more than triple. We've had more than a dozen rows tight together and never had a problem with drying nicely. Here is just one example but we have many more. I think we have one right now that is about 7 rows together. It will be very nice when it comes time to burn.
You know, I don’t really know? It’s just one of those things I guess. I’ve stacked double and triple rows many times with no problems. This one was in a shady spot under a tree with no top cover, 4 years of wet leaves stuffed in between the rows. It’s dryer than it was but not where I’d expect it. Oh well, we’ll be fine. I have plenty of really dry wood, this was just the oldest in the rotation.
Ah ha. We've found the flaw. No top cover. That can do it for sure especially with wet stuff in between the rows. Wishing better luck for the next time.
