Knocked off a little early from work and got some saw time. We have had some sunny days since Tues and the fields weren't too soft. Rain all week next week so thought I better get my hind end in gear. I have been a splitting fool so I had room in the back out of the wife's sight so I'm not taking any new ground.
Forgot to mention this load officially cleared what was in the way for planting season. I may call it till fall unless I go investigating or talk to the farmer, I'm sure there is more somewhere. If I really get the itch there is a fence row that needs thinning. If it was up to my farmer friend I could cut all year but I put the brakes on for warm weather. I'm blessed. Still have a lot of splitting to do
Nice score! I actually don't currently have any cherry in my stacks. I'll have to change that because it really is nice to burn with it's blue flames. I too take the hot weather off for any wood processing work. I try to at least. Every once in a while, I'll get a score that I have to take due to storm damage, or a neighbor having a tree taken down.
Nice score. Im on the other sude of the coin, I have a bunch of rounds and logs that I'll process when it's warmer/ hot out. Too wet right now in tye processing area, and to be honest I don't mind splitting in the heat ( over 90* forget it). Afterwards I'll go lay down in the creek. Wife thinks Im
Just can’t seem to get firm ground for long here in south central PA. Predicting another 2” of rain this Tuesday. If it wasn’t for that, I’d be moving wood around to replace what was used this season. Only thing I can do is fully pack my staging area and figure it out later, hopefully not in the sweltering heat. Like you, I’m trying not to use new ground for wood after that last expansion. I like to tap out above 80f but for the right score I’ll bump that up a little. I have a cherry on my radar now so just need weather to cooperate.
Yes calling for rain this week here every day after today, some of it heavy and lots. Then 4 days of dry and sunny,so it is for now.
When the wood comes or a score I am cutting I guess I should be appreciated that I am a roofer and don’t mind the heat
Definitely will not! Cherry needs to come down first as the BL needs to fall directly where that tree stands. Burning BL nuggets right now and boy do they ever last a long time in the firebox!! Much longer than the red and chestnut oak I'm used to. Sure is a strong smoke though. It's been almost 10 years since I've burned any.
Good stuff for sure. Is that huge BL you scored to be burnt next Winter? Hopefully cutting some at my Manic Monday score tomorrow.
I still like BL but cannot burn a stove full in the Buck, has to be mixed with other wood to burn well.
I’m considering moving it up in the que. Was scored Nov ‘21 so it’s plenty dry. Main reason is the location it’s in. I’d like to make that a “special reserve” spot. I could always get it in the basement and use it for coldest days.
I find the same thing...doesn't really burn much, just kinda turns into coal (really hot coals though!) I have often wondered how it would do as shoulder season wood, since a stove/furnace full of hot coals can actually heat the house in that weather. If you have an old school stove it seems to do better.
I've found BL burns best as a part of a mix. It's almost like it's too hard, especially the petrified stuff. Sitting on a bed of coals it does well, but it's more like maintaining the temp vs raising it.
