This morning a girl who is under my supervision at work called out sick. She said she "has a cold or something and my throat hurts bad." Cry me a freaking river!

    She's 21.
I would say lots of kids today are a bunch of wimps.

Meanwhile my one friend who has cancer at multiple areas and is getting treatment, tries to go to work when he feels well enough to.

    Oh … I don’t know…

buddy was complaining of a cough for 3 weeks.

his last Facebook on Monday in 2021 was “I’ve never had a cold kick my azz this much…”

On Tuesday, he was admitted to the hospital.

on Thursday, his widow had to make plans for his funeral due to his being sick with Covid. He was 40 years old.

Does her job have X number of sick days as part of her contract? if yes, to me I consider those as resources that are there to be used or lost. I'd rather have someone who is sick stay home than risk getting others sick.

In the last about 5 years in this job title, I've called out sick... one time. My wife on the other hand, who is a CCU nurse, misses more days in a year than I have in 20. The hospital would rather you stay home than the possibility of spreading (insert flu/covid etc here) whatever it is you may have.
But the kids of today thing.. IMO parenting skills are dwindling and have been for a while. Do I blame the kid, not always.

I’m a maintenance mechanic at a vocational school and we have about 15 people in the maintenance department. We rarely have a full crew and it’s almost impossible to hire anyone. We have people go through the interview process, get the job and not show up for work, ever. My boss thinks I’m awesome just because I show up consistently and get my work done. All my life old people had a hard time getting good jobs because of their age, now it’s a badge of honor.

I'm not a part of old man club yet, but I've lived long enough to see the way the world works. Some people are slackers, or have addictions, and that's it. Some people are immune comprimised, while others could eat biohazard waste and be right as rain.
While it is admirable to some employers to have that "never misses work guy", when they should have stayed home, but rather expose 20-30 people to something, I'm sure the man hour loss doesn't balance out. Seriously, worked with a hero like that...could be throwing up out both ends but he'd still show up. Then I lose a day, another driver a day, equipment operator a day, and so on, just like a wave. But hey, the hero didn't miss a day and the company lost 5-10 worker days over the next week or two.

To the OP, pay attention if the girl is consistently sick on a Friday or Monday. Headstart on party time.

Become self employed, that puts a new perspective on things.

While Im not self employed I basically run the business. On a full day there's 3 full time people here. Her being one of them. Not too worried about her infecting anyone else, as she has a desk away from me and on another floor. Thursday was her weekly day off as well, so Im thinking a long weekend.
The other employee hasn't been in since Dec. 23. He says he has been sick. Im skeptical as I have a long list of BS reasons from him (for example, "Im dizzy and stuff" after he text me the day before he didn't want to go to work) and in the past has really abused time off. He's just downright lazy. The owner is finally listening to what Ive been telling him.

Yeah that sick pay sucks and the boss just tells you if you don’t like it go somewhere else or just go to work.

My sister in law managed a nursing home and had "younger employee" issues similar to yours Biddleman . Had one call in, one morning... said she couldn't possibly get her car dug out and drive to work that day due to the snow fall the night before. My SIS said "I'll be there in 20 minutes to pick you up"... never had an issue again...:D

I get/used to get the same reaction at my work, they had 3-5 people try out the job and not show up or just take off (one of which royally screwed me by taking all the different brass fittings and throw em all together into several bins in the cabinet, now I can't find, inventory, or size chit! It's a work in progress though.) And we constantly have people time theiving from sites (clock in from your phone and sit on your azz or just leave for a few hours) the number is down but not by much.

In 2012/13, he and I lived on the phones talking to each other about trucking.

it was because of him, I went and got my own authority and struck out as a true independent owner operator.

he is missed by a lot of people…
