Now you all have to hold me to it! If I put it here maybe ill remember and get pics Ive got a pile to get at this week at night I hope!
Over 20 but I also foolishly let some others borrow the splitter. That proved to be a bad move twice. One time the guy split an amazing amount of wood that I could hardly believe. Shoot, not only did he not check the oil or filter but didn't even put gas in it before bringing it back. Geeze. So, over time, it started using some oil. Then someone borrowed it and I even sent a quart of oil with the splitter and instructions to stop the motor occasionally and check the oil. Well, they didn't bring the splitter back for a long time and it was going to storm with the splitter outdoors uncovered, so I went to get it. First thing I did when I got in in the shed was to check the oil. What oil? There was none in there. Needless to say, I have been babying it along for a few years but it is on it's last leg of the journey so time to change it out.
Yea Hear similar stories often I rarely borrow, but was taught to return borrowed stuff in better condition than when I got it. Still, 20 years is respectable , guessing it's split a few hundred cord of wood. Hope the new engine is as well made as the old one
The old 5hp Briggs on the didier splitter is about as old as I am. The copper color paint means it's about 40 yrs old. It's still running great, and my buddy just cleaned the carb and checked it all out. I split a load of elm with it to verify. Yep. Some elm still stalls it out. Lol
That too is the way I was taught plus return it with a full tank of gas. Yes, several hundred cord has went through that splitter.
Not sure Pete. I moved the splitter so we can get at it but because it is so low it will probably tear my back up. If you have some time I could use the help. I doubt it will take long to change it over. I think there is only 4 mounting bolts and then the pump and that is it other than putting gas and oil in it and pulling the cord. I wanted to put an electric start on it but was a bit more than I had to spend right now.
Should be pretty simple! I'll see about getting up there Saturday. It's usually a 4 bolt mounting bracket for the coupler and a set screw holding the coupler and shaft.
That sounds right Pete. I got the splitter where we can get at it but haven't really looked. Seems though that's what I remember about it. Not a hard job for sure but is for me unless I could raise it in the air a bit. Not really wanting to do that but will if I have to. I got some shots in my neck Monday and was told to take it easy for a few days. We'll see about that. I will say the shots worked great so far. Woke up this morning with no pain in my neck and haven't had that for a long time. Just a slight ache right now but I can live with that. I hate that pain and it was getting bad down the arms and into the fingers. That about drives you batty.
