I have to cut two slots in the bottom of my 8x12 posts for my timber frame build I'm working on. I cut them with my MS461 with 3/8" chain and .063 gauge per normal with my alaskan style chainsaw mill.

When I read the instructions a 2nd time, I noticed they said to use a .050 gauge 3/8" chain.

I thought the gauge was for the width of the bar slot and drive link and didn't have anything to do with the kerf which was the important part in this case for the slots.

These are for a T shaped bracket that inserts into the bottom of the post as an anchor.

Id say drive link thickness and overall kerf width are related. But with a difference of .013, in you application the difference won't matter. Id prob do some test cuts first though.

You are correct; gauge is the drive link width. It makes no difference on your cut width.
