Bought a deal on a group of Stihl chains last week. One was 36" semi skip full chisel. The rare occasion i run the 36" bar i use full skip full chisel (rapid super). MS460 & 500i the two saws ill use that bar on.
My question: Have access to 36" sugar maple. Will they handle this chain? Kinda itching to give it a try.
    Thoughts, opinions, your experience?

Well, there's one way to find out. :) I've never ran semi skip. I'm curious what you find out if you try it though.

I have run the standard Stihl RS chains on my 36 inch bar the few times I needed it.
Worked just fine for what I was doing.

Give it a shot and see , can't hurt.

I have full skip for my 42" bar. I think you'd be fine using either (full or semi) on that maple. As mentioned on the other thread, just keep an eye on chain dryness. If it gets too dry/hot, let it fast idle high enough to spin the chain long enough to soak w/ oil.

Let er rip tater chip. :dex:

You think that creamsicle has the gonads to pull the 36 inch bar?

Won't hurt to try as long as it keep an eye on it so nothing gets damaged.
Personally I have never run skip chain. Even the 60" bar wears a full comp.

They should pull the chains well . Watch to be sure the saws are oiling the bar well .
Just fwiw info here that , you likely know ….. skip has 1/3 less cutters ,semi skip 1/5 less .

Absolutely. Comes down to the chain and how low the rakers/depth gauges are. Out of the box I find RS to be a bit grabby but fast. So patients is key. It’ll tear that maple a new ash.

Brad they will pull it fine the new saws cut by rpm not low end torque like the old saws the skip and semi skip keep the revs up lets you push a longer bar with less hp I sell 404 oregon super skip to several customers running 60 and 72 inch bars on chainsaw mills one has a 880 Stihl the other has a 3120 husky they both switched to the super skip once they tried it they were running std sequence 404 chain for milling the super skip has 2 cutters @every 10 inches on the chain they said it makes a big difference JB

the other thing i forgot to mention was that the chain is square grind too. How much faster of a cut out of the box vs standard grind?

I've never had the opportunity to run a square grind so can't comment on that.

I’ve never run a factory grind. I’ve heard lots of guys say they leave a lot in the table so don’t fully judge square chain on those loops. If you want to keep them square, send em down my way, I’ll return them in better than new condition.
One of the biggest differences I experienced was how much smoother it cut, and in the end it held its edge longer than round.
Take notice of your “chips” coming out. They should be like ribbons.

I tried square once. It was "box new" and did not impress me. I threw it on the grinder and turned it round, then it cut real good.

Same here. Fun to cut big logs, loading them is another story! Too bad that big oak on Sackett Point isnt easily accessable. I know there is another load of BL scattered about there.
