Full beam vs half beam splitters

Anyone using a half beam? I’m just curious about how it’s holding up. I’ve seen cylinders mounted in a trunnion like that before on some applications but I was surprised when I saw so many splitters with them. Seems to be a new thing they’re pushing pretty hard in some places, and downplaying the full beam models. I’m trying to get my hands on a YU2866 Yardmax full beam but everyone has just the half beam. They have the 25 ton full beam, same price, 999, and it’s a little faster but I’m more concerned about the power for oak, etc.
Does anyone have a Yardmax splitter of any size or design? I like the features on them like the twin tables and the 4 way head that’s included. I looked at the County Line 22 ton today at TSC for the same price and no tables. 22-25 tons would probably do almost as well I know but why advertise something you don’t have?
HD carries Yardmax but they don’t seem to be able to get that model. They’ll gladly sell me any other one from the line though. Either the 28 ton is a real hot seller or maybe it’s just a come on?
Seems most of them are built in China to pretty similar specs, it’s just a matter of the features you want and dealing with someone who will stand behind it.
The 2 online splitter outlets claim to have them, and at the same price with free shipping but I don’t really want to go that route for something like that. I want someone I can talk to face to face and go back to if there’s any issues if I’m spending a grand or more.

Oak splits like buttah

 

I agree that vertical is the way to go, and sitting down to boot. It’s by far the best way if you have a bad back. I’ve had one surgery... But I’m not the only one operating it. My daughter and SIL will be doing quite a bit for me and they prefer horizontal unless the rounds are huge. That’s why I’m interested in the tables on both sides especially. Great for team work.
I have a little tractor seat I put on top of a creeper seat to use in the garage. I’m thinking that might work out well in front of the splitter. It swivels real nice.

 

I know. They’re the same splitter really. Same specs except for the cycle time and the amount of force. The 28 ton runs in a little lower gear so to speak and gives a little more oomph for a small reduction in speed. They’re the same price and I’m more interested in the extra power than the speed. But I’ll only wait so long and I will buy the 25 if I can’t get the 28.

You would never have a problem splitting. whatever you have with the 25ton

 

I think you’re right about that but I’m being a bit stubborn. Some things I prefer on the beefier side if I can get it. Working on heavy equipment in the woods industry taught me that 40 years ago. Operator error is often to blame and I won’t be operating it most of the time so I’d prefer to err on the side of caution.

That's just wrong...dont do it....Splitters were meant to be used horizontally with very few exceptions....So sayeth Timberwolf-Seriously, people do get caught up in the tonnage capacity and it is way overrated. TW has interesting insight on that issue as well. They have a great rep, wish I had bought one and may sell the Cub Cadet to obtain one. I went halfs with a former wood partner and he bailed, he insisted on the CC, I bought out his share and I'm good with it, just would not have been my final choice-I'd like to have a TW2-FWIW-Love ya Sir Savage!

 

How about a splitter for your tractor. Add a remote to it and get a Split fire 3203. You will have a commercial grade splitter that will last a lifetime and an adjustable height since it is on the 3pt. 4 way wedges are overrated IMO. They work pretty good if the wood is the right size.

It will be a little slower on your tractor than the one in the video since yours is less GPM.

 

I picked up the Huskee 35 ton back in 2009~10 that's out at my partner's place. Put 100's of cords through it with 0 problems. Picked up a Country Line 25 ton a year ago for the house (can anyone say spoiled). The 25 ton is all you would need. Both of mine are from Tractor Supply and work great full beam splitters. Go with your heart and don't look back.
