Got the first stack moved up to the front porch. 10'x4'x4', plus a couple inches each direction, for a generous 1.25 cord. All Red Maple, CSS this spring, all around 15% MC. The best part? The new location is approx 10' from my stove. Before: After: Wanted to post a pic of the now empty old location, but trying to upload pics today is becoming rather painful. I plan to replace that stack with a 10' diameter, 5' high holzhausen. Part of the reason for moving this stack now, was so I could start on the holz this weekend. It's going to be mostly made up of the barkless black locust I've been hauling lately, probably 2.5 cords worth, for the bottom of the "house", then some black cherry on top, for the thatched roof.
I want to know where all you's guys ugly stacks are??? No one ever takes pictures of them. You's guys must cut all straight grained wood and use a tape measure a plumb bob to make beautiful stacks like!!! Hell; even my "straight" grained wood is crooked and I could never achieve a stack like that with the wood that I scrounge up!!!!
We run all of our splits thru a bench saw first, before stacking... sand the corners a bit... then, set up the laser level fer stackin' ...
I like the way you think... There is more room over there, but that's where I have my kindling box. You can see it in the 2nd pic. Forgot to take a pic of that - there were some tiny splits that I turned into more kindling instead of restacking. The kindling box runneth over now! Thanks for the compliment! No level or plumb bob - just eyeballs. It takes a lot of sorting - I sort out the straightest grain pieces from the uglier ones, and also sort them by length, as I load them into my trailer. Then I sort the straight grained ones by thickness as I build the cribs, to keep everything level. And most importantly, I take a pic from a good angle, so you don't see my mistakes!
AWESOME ! Stack looks great & the wood looks well seasoned. Pictuere says: " A True "woodhoarder" lives here " I invision Gramps sitting on the chair, with a double barrel shotgun leaning against the stack LOL
I'll bet your wife/SO says you're OCD!!! Hell; if I make something that looks that beautiful, I want it to last..................
She does, and she's right. BUT - around here, 'obsession' and 'compulsion' are not considered 'disorders'... They are encouraged! Unfortunately, I can't play music or paint a beautiful picture... But I can stack wood real nice! Guess my art was meant to be destroyed... Have you seen my sawbuck? http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/sawbuck-build.5730/ Nope, this one wasnt covered, but it got lots of sun where it was. Should stay plenty dry now! And here's a pic of the kindling box: Bring it on, old man winter!! Whatchoo got??
