logging operation not far from the house the past few weeks. I made an inquiry on the trash pile and was given permission to have at it. All seem to be sized for easy handling. Happy days, indeed!
That’s great Sourwood... Can you honor that score with a pic, you know- when you get a chance? Edit: Ah Ha- there’s a pic now!!! Nice!
Wow, looks nice and easy to handle-I'll second the "You Suck" nomination for the day! Congrats! Looks like some ash? What other species and whats your guesstimate at this time as to cordage?
I am not sure on the cord are , this pic was a drive by shooting. I am sure there is a lot of ash, folks here have been doing their best to cull them out. The field is mud, so it would be a mess right now to make much headway anytime soon. But I will take my tractor over and load onto a trailer if nothing else. I divert from the blowdown trees still on my farm, when these easy pickings can be had.
Good deal, just make sure the pickings are yours and the landowner is cool with you waiting...sure they are as they prob dont care for their yard/pastures torn up-Might want to refrain from the drive-by shootings though-Regardless, great score and good luck with it and remember the pics...
What the heck? Looks like you may run the risk of getting the truck muddy driving up to that pile....can't they move it closer for you?
Heck yeah, close by free wood is the best! They don’t come often, so savor the moment. I got my first turned down request today. Pasture was cleared for a commercial building off of the highway. A large pile of trees, branches and old fence is sitting there all lonely and wanting to come home to my place; and the foreman gave me the property owner’s number. I called and asked if the wood was spoken for, and the guy said it was going to hauled away to the landfill. I asked if I could work at the pile and decrease the amount he’d have to pay to have hauled away, and he said NO. He was afraid of liability, so I offered to bring him a notarized release of any responsibility for my activity of putting wood in my truck and hauling it away. He still said no. Disappointing, but it’s his property so he can do what he wants with it.
Oh yeah. Interstate 69 was routed through our county to ultimately connect Evansville to Indianapolis. As they converted to four lane highway to I69, they cleared a bunch of trees. Regulations prevented neighbors from getting any of the wood. They brought in giant shredders and converted it all to wood chips I haven't had a chance to get to any of it, but Yooperdave makes a good poitn. I might ask the logger boss what they might charge to haul it to my place, or at least load onyo my car trailer.
The last two years we had a major electric line with new poles go through our county. Any wooded area that the owners didn't want the logs, were advertised and you could go get them (if you were real nice and offered food or barley pop they would even load your trailer if the boss man wasn't around) or so I heard. I have enough trees to keep me busy on my farm.
Got a better pic today. Had 48 hour flu this past weekend and it was beautiful both days. No energy except to play with my round stacks a bit. It is starting to dry up on the field. I hope to go on the attack soon.
Nice one buddy, thats quite a pile. No branches, no brush - im no jealous person but im kinda close to it right now.
Visited the log pile today and made a dent. I am hesitant to chance doing it in stages. The work can be seen by the main road through the township. Each trip is cut enough rounds to split and load. Will make at least one trip tomorrow. Before long there won’t be any logs that will be accessible without pulling them out with a chain.
Leaving what you can't load in log form is the best way to deter anyone from "helping themselves". Maybe a sign placed right on the wood processing area announcing ownership?
I picked up a second load of the rounds made yesterday. What is there now is more work than an opportunist thief would mess with. Hopefully I can take a day off this week and hit it some more. I finished my second holsen haus, with the exception of some shingle pieces to rainproof it. I think about three more good size logs cut and split, and I will invite some Amish neighbors to have at it too. They are new to the county-came from Canada, though several counties nearby have had generations of Amish, we never had any. They are firewood making fools, from what my buddy says.
Got onto the field side of the pile after work. It dried enough to get at it, and it was easier pickings. Rain is scheduled for the weekend so I am taking the morning off to get in there and split. Looks like another bunch of logs have come out and a second pile of rejected logs has started. I rescind my surrender of the “You Suck” award. BWAAAHHAAAHAAAAA
