Just tossing this out there. Decided to do a search for Black Locust on FB marketplace. Nothing in my area but there’s a nice score in philly. So if there’s anyone from that area GET MOVING!!! Don’t make me send Brad down there
Here's some in Altoona. No pic so not sure about it. That is still far enough for me I'm not sure it would be worth it unless it was already bucked up. TurboDiesel Scotty Overkill Spirit of Two Socks Not sure who else is nearby there....
Not me anyway. Just blindly following the gps app. A little rush hour traffic mixed with construction from Penn to NY. If Pennsylvania would melt all those truck tires over the potholes they’d have the smoothest roads in the country LOL Seems the old concrete highways are very tough on truck tires. Too much heat I assume.
missed this thread. You and me road trip ! Im jonesing to score more locust myself. Know of some in a couple spots but a bit of work on the second location. Blow over, major tangle, prickers/vines etc. and need to get permission. Close by and Winter score. Not going anywhere unless a FHC member spots it. Not telling you where it is either Joe!
philly may be a bit far. New Haven is doable LOL Get my trailer within 50 feet and I’ll yank that thing loose Are they bigguns?
Medium sized trees. One snapped off, couple cut logs, couple may need to be felled. Tornado from May 2018. House way up in back. Have to knock and ask. I stopped there back in April and found maggots under the bark of one log i was going to grab. Snakes, bees, critters dont bother me, but maggots really skeeve me out. Found out the decaying bark smells like rotting flesh hence the infestation. Did yours smell when the bark came off?
Are you sure they’re maggots or just baby grubs? I had some of those under the bark too. One of the reasons I like my firewood debarked. Had tiny ones, some bigger ones and in one rotten section some really big ugly suckers. Will turn into Terradactyls I think. Seems to me Locust, for whatever reasons, develops cracks in the inner trunk. These cracks either try or accomplish growing bark inside the tree. Bugs love it. I’ve never seen a tree that grows bark inside in such a fashion. Didn’t really notice any smell. My sniffer doesn’t work too well tho.
They looked enough like maggots for me to not hang around and check the wood out any further. Almost lost my lunch. That pic is from April. I had spied that wood there and I.D.ed it as locust after learning about it here. Ill get the stuff in the Winter when they are least active/frozen. I go by the wood all the time. Less than ten minutes from me. Didnt notice about the bark. My locust score last month was fresh cut and the other a two YO blow over that lost the bark when i grabbed it. Slimier than banana peels under it. Have about a face cord of the stuff now.
