33" Garter. Biggest we've ever had on the property. Ever since we moved here, we've had our fair share and then some. Pretty sure we have an underground den somewhere. Anywho, just thought I'd share.
Oh and btw, it's in a covered bucket and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

They don't hurt anyone. They are beneficial. They eat rodents, slugs, crickets etc.

    Let him live!

:bug:At least it wasn't a rattler or copperhead.
I know what I'd do with it :axe:
That's reason enough for me to keep the wood outside.

Definitely don't kill 'em. I've relocated more than I can count. Won't last long with today's weather though.

You could throw it outside, but it would probably beat you back into the house!

Guessing he was hibernating in a void within a log? Perhaps he was already in the Sow-nah of a basement you got there...

    That's a big ribbon snake.
If you have a rock pile/out cropping with an open void or a granite door stoop that's probably the best bet she has.
I've found them moving around in the leaf litter here even after multiple overnight hard freezes.

Definitely wasn't in any wood. I'm sure of that. We've had quite a few of them over the years. My basement isn't the tightest so there are places to slither. One summer my wife found about 12 all tangled up sunning in the yard. I wasn't there and she killed every one of em, no snake soup though. :picard:

Big warm pile of wood in the basement just waiting to attract mice, non-venomous snake offering to work for food. I'd put him on staff until spring and then drop him off in the woods somewhere.

I'd find a way to keep it alive. They keep the rodent popukation in check.

Can't keep him/her in the house, wife ain't havin' it! I wouldn't either honestly. In the stacks outside is different.
Can't think of a winning solution for this little bugger. This Thursday the weather forecast is showing 51, guess he'll go for a ride then. I'm sure it'll be warm in the meantime...

That's a big garter snake. One day my dog went running into our barn and came back all bloody. I thought she was hurt, but it turned out that she had killed a big garter snake like yours. Great dog!
