Really feeling for the folks in Fort Mac. Im hearing stories of people who have lost houses, hotels burnt, gas stations exploding, the hospital was evacuated, my wifes cousin was going to work in the oil sands and was turned around thankfully. Its looking like the biggest evacuation in Alberta history. Today it was 31 c up there! I hope that everyone gets out safe! Just saw this on the news this morning. Definitely a scary situation. Hope none of our members are in harms way and praying for the folks up there
I can't imagine trying to evacuate 60,000 - 80,000 people. Where do they go and what about their animal friends? Just rhetorical questions as I hope and pray that everyone stays out of harm's way.
Prayers and positive thoughts for those folks @ Ft. Mac. Nasty thing to have happen for sure.................
I havent heard anything about animals, so hopefully they have made it out to. It does concern me that the evacuation order came in very quickly. I still havent heard of any fatalities so fingers crossed it stays that way. Many folks headed south to Edmonton and apparently the community support has been great. Camp grounds have opened up, hotels are full.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone around Fort Mac. What a nightmare for those involved. It seems the fire was close to the city and then the wind changed, and bam! everbody had to evacuate. I know people hate facebook, but there's a lot of social media info and help related postings. People organizing roving food or fuel deliveries for those stranded along the highway etc.
It appears most of the surrounded areas are forested. That is both good and bad. We pray for the safety of those involved and hope they are able to save part of that town.
I just saw this on the National News. Wow. I hope the rains come for those fires and many other dry places all over Canada and the U.S. Thoughts and prayers for those in need.
There has been some good news though. There were a number of expecting mothers that had been evacuated who have given birth. Some of them were born in mining camps north of Fort Mac and some were born in the city of Edmonton, they will have some adventurous tales to tell when they grow up! Ive also heard of amazing support from industry as well as communities and citizens. People are providing stranded drivers with gas, food and water. Homes are being opened up to strangers and animals are being housed in kennels and shelters. Forest fire crews are en route from the east and the military is helping out as well.
Sean keep the news coming! US is horrible with news outside of our country and worse in political season!
I decided to post this originally so that the members of FHC could see what was happening since I wasn't sure what kind of coverage this story would get. Im nowhere near this disaster but I have friends and family that work north of the city in the oil sands. Ive heard that some smaller communities south of Fort Mac are being evacuated. There was a bit of rain overnight and temperatures are cooler but it remains to be seen as to whether it will have much affect. Here is a scary video of one mans exit from his neighborhood. The heat must have been amazing. I wonder how heat tolerant the paint is on those vehicles. Harrowing Fort McMurray wildfire escape
