At my company's employee banquet so I snuck out and tried to change my fuel filter on the 99f150. Google say I need a special tool, anything else I can use?

Uh... Why not wait till your at home? Pretty much guaranteed to smell like gas after... Not exactly pleasant to most folks.

The tool can be borrowed at most auto parts stores, or bought for fairly cheap.

    Small plier looking tool.

Can be borrowed or bought for pretty cheap. Also, fuel line disconnects can be had for cheap too.

Sometime that works or small screwdrivers, but you can also break it easily doing that and its normally a PITA where you'd need 3 or 4 hands

Its very much a "use the tool" deal since its cheap and makes it very easy.

Not sure how fancy the banquet is, but even a jeans and TShirt event, I highly doubt people would appreciate a person fuming up the place reeking of gasoline.
Well unless the banquet is in a gas refinery!

I don't think i've ever changed a fuel filter without at least having gas run down my arms. Other times it's been a huge mess lol. Just grab the tool, it's cheap and makes the job much easier.

A whole string of cuss words...

About an hour later I'm headed back to the parts store because the plastic tool broke and still the filter won't budge.

Sorry I forgot to mention that the plastic clip tool is very easy to break. They make a metal tool for a few bucks more. Good luck!

Easy to break? It took me over an hour to break it! :D something different about the metal one, clips popped right off. New one on in 3 mins. Really helped the problem, still think I have bad plugs or coil pack to boot.

If the line or fittings are rusty, the metal one slides into where it needs to be much easier.

Did you replace any coil packs?

Go to the auto parts store and they should hook the diagnostic tool up to the truck up for free.

That miss will only go away for a day or two if it's dry. You have a bad CP or possibly 2. I had 2 bad the last time and it only felt like one was missing.

In the last 12 years of owning my truck. I have replaced at least one coil pack a year. At least..

Haven't yet, we just finished up our splitting for the year (good feeling) and I ain't doing crap tomorrow except mowing. I am replacing spark plugs next week (probably wednesday) since I have them already. Coil packs are next-- will probably order in a ten pack tomorrow.

I had to buy a coil pack from Auto Zone in an emergency, it lasted exactly one month! Next one I got from NAPA an it is going on 3 years now.

Just be glad they didn't put your fuel filter on top of the gas tank

Hopefully your 99 doesn't have the gremlins that my 00 had. I spent months trying to figure out a fuel/ignition issue what freakin thing. Even the scanner was wrong when diagnosing parts. I'd replaced the "bad" part and then another one would start throwing codes and we were back to the drawing board. Even my brother in law and all the mechanics at his shop were totally stumped. Ended up selling the truck, Good Riddiance! :loco:
