    Hi all, looking into getting a car and wife is interested in a Ford Expedition, anything we should be looking for or steering away from?

    I think they went to only 3.5 twin turbo Ecoboost engines in 2013. So I'd think all would be 3.5 ecoboost engines. Probably went to the 10 speed Auto in '17 or so.

    I think there were a couple model years where the 3.5's were having cam phaser issues. Not sure if that includes the Exploditions, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

    I’m kinda out of the loop on that. I know there is a TSB with updated parts so I would think that at some point it got straightened out. My opinion here, that 10 speed is an overcomplicated turd. The last vehicle we sent out for replacement the bill was just over 12k$ the trans alone was 9k. I looked extensively to find a shop (other than dealer) that would rebuild and nobody around here would touch it only would install a rebuilt.

    with all that said I know a half dozen families that have the latest body style expeditions and they all like them. My good buddy, 20+ year Ford Tech. Wife drives a ‘23. The front diff did randomly disassemble itself while we were on a multi day fishing trip last summer…

    It seems that a bushing would slide in a bore exposing fluid passages. Added a flange as a keeper.
    At least it's a solid repair. Not like GM saying all you need is a thicker oil.

    My opinion again… all modern vehicles are overcomplicated to the point that they are pretty much unreliable. All manufactures are guilty.


    Yesterday I did a rear brake job on a 2023 F150 it had an electronic parking brake so it requires you to put the vehicle into “brake maintenance mode” while preforming repairs. When I was done I went to get it out of maintenance mode and it wouldn’t. Turns out there was a DTC in memory that was keeping it from happening. In order to clear the DTC the ABS module needed to be reprogrammed. Thankfully I have the Ford diagnostic equipment do do it but if I was Joe homeowner the vehicle would have been a brick in my driveway! Complete BS!

    Another recent experience-

    2022 f150 the keyless unlock feature didn’t work. Where you can just put your hand on the handle with the key fob in your pocket. Turns out that the computer monitors the battery’s state of charge. This driver only really does short trips so the battery never really gets fully charged. If the state of charge is under75% the computer will shut off unnecessary functions. All I needed to do was charge the battery and it worked. So now what they need to keep a charger in the garage to keep the battery above 75%? More Bovine fecal matter!

    That's why I'm planning on holding onto my older vehicles as long as I can! Might even sell the one newerish one for something a little older, just because of all the electronic "idiotproof" BS on it.

    I want a naturally aspirated motor, power steering and at least a passenger power window. A/c is nice as well. The rest is trash!

    The thing that really got me about the brake maintenance problem, why did the software allow me to enter it without a scan tool but not exit. That could easily be programmed out. Seems intentional to me.

    My Explorers have been great, although each has had its minor issues at some point. I have bought 3 used: 2005, 2014 & 2018 (current vehicle). The two earlier models had ~150k miles on them when I bought them. The 2018 mode had a little less than 35k.

    I know that Explorers and Expeditions aren't the same, but that is as close as I can get.

    Before buying used, I use CarComplaints.com to review the years so I know which ones to avoid and which ones are good. Once you pick the model, (the link just takes you to the ford page), there is a quick synopsis

    Then click on the year to look at the complaint. You can't really go by how many complaints there are, but it will break down the types of complaints (paint, electrical, engine, tranny etc).

    Expeditions aren't nearly as popular as Explorers, so it is harder to get a sense of what is going on.

    Looking at the Explorer & F150 pages (the most popular Fords, so should have a lot of stuff going on), it seems that either complaints have really dropped in the last 4 years, or not as many people are reporting to this website. I bought my 2018 in 2022, so had a good feel for it from the information.

    After Googling "ford expedition problems by year", I found several sites that do a comparison write up, so you might want to take a peek at some of those.
