Here is an alternate place to buy bags, seems cheaper than the stores. i just ordered 2 rolls of 11" x 18' for under $20 shipped http://www.thevakshack.com/Home.html
Will you please do a follow up post after you have used these. I have tried some other brands but was disappointed when the seals didn't hold. I would like to save on those too if they work out well.
Yes I well I've had brand name foodsaver bags loose their seal as well Out of curiosity where did you get/buy your "other brands" of bags at?
We are stocked up on bags since 2013 (long moving process to a second home). The times before I used coupon codes from FoodSaver directly. They used to run a killer promo atleast once per year. I learned of it from slickdeals.net both times.
I sent for one pack, and I got the other from Mardens. The last one is a "fire sale" store local to this area. The bunch I got at Mardens I have to be sure to seal twice. I like to put hamburger in them rolled out about a half inch thick. Very fast defrost that way.
wow, they are quick I got shipping confirmation at 4:30AM my time this morning. 2 day priority mail out of Florida
the 2 rolls I ordered arrived today/ very happy with the shipping portion initial examination of product looks pretty much the same as standard foodsaver bags as far as texture and thickness and the 18' roll fit right into my machine packed about 7 bags of left over pulled pork from this weekends cook, bags sealed up fine and pulled a good vacuum. so far very pleased with the bags, time well tell to see if they loose the vacuum over time in the freezer ( have had this happen to foodsaver bags in the past) only thing I dont like about them is they do not have the little hash marks up the sides of bag like foodsaver bags do, hash marks makes cutting bags to uniform size easier, but this is a small detail
I picked up the large combo pack of food saver bags at Costco on sale last year. On sale it was a very good deal but like some have already mentioned, I've had a few lose their seal. I'm interested to see how these work out for you too
Any updates on these bags Elderthewelder ? That good deal on foodsaver bags I mentioned above hasn't really panned out. more and more are loosing their seals
So all that pulled pork is still in the freezer since I vac packed it back in July. I just looked at it all and it is all still vac sealed with no leaks. I have not used them other than that though. Based off the pulled pork they are just as good or better then the foodsaver ones
I had bad luck with some off brand bags. Don't remember the name, but they were bought at wally world. Been sucking it up and paying the premium for foodsaver brand since. I don't use the vac sealer a ton and it's main usage is for storing ammunition. The corners of the carboard boxes will poke through the imitators, the foodsaver bags just seem tougher for that particular (and probably uncommon) use. Yup, I also hoard other stuff besides firewood!
Great idea A friend of mine told me a guy at his deer camp cleans, oils and vacuum seals his rifle after the season.
I'm a little late to the party here but I have been using the vakshack bags for many years now. No real issue with them. So far they have been great. Nice heavy duty bags. I also want to say that the Weston 2300 stainless steel vacuum sealer I purchased from them has been flawless as well. I've processed and packaged probably a solid dozen deer with it since we got it. Not to mention the 100s of pounds of produce we put up in the freezer. Also smoked brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, etc. Long story short its been used a lot! I'm very pleased with the sealer and bags.
Been trying the double seal trick someone mentioned here the last few times I have used my sealer and it seems to be working
Using a roll, I double heat sealed the first end 1/2" from each other and the after vacuum sealing the other end I place another heat seal about 1/2" away again. The couple of packages I have done this way have not had any vacuum leaks. I might have had a little better than 50% success with holding a vacuum with just a single seal of late. I am using food saver brand bags and sealer for what it is worth.
Looking back in this thread I didn't see double seal mentioned here but it was definitely mentioned on this site somewhere in another thread that got me to thinking
