I was out making firewood yesterday afternoon, beautiful sunny windy day here in Southern New England. I removed the rest of the plastic from my broken Fiskars X27 (see "broken F iskars" thread from last week) to give it a try and see how well it worked as a wedge. Some tough stuff. I seldom use the sledge and wedge but was surprised how well it worked with a 4lb short sledge, almost like a blacksmith hammering metal. Tried it with the 6 lb medium handle sledge and it worked well too. Only issue was it was off centered but did work. Altered my swing accordingly. Had some partly seasoned red maple rounds to try it on. Easy enough to hold and start in place. Normally i hate sledge and wedge but actually enjoyed it!
Nice repurpose! The sharper the wedge, the better it works. Up to a point, you don't need a knife edge.
I like it and suppose with a short sledge you could split while sitting. Might be a good thing for some folks
I'd be a little leary of using that as a wedge, I don't think the composition of the metal is appropriate for striking...you might get some flying bits of metal.
The Fiskars head is off centered? Maybe that is part of their secret sauce? Just what I was thinking too...
Second this one. If this hardened steel, a piece can chip off with serious velocity. You can put the non-business end against a grinding wheel and if the sparks are abundant and look like shooting stars I'd skip using it.
