How do you guys sharpen your Fiskars? I have one that I bought off a buddy. It has a nick or two at the bottom of the blade. It is still fairly sharp but didn't know if I should use a file, stone or different tool. Should I sharpen it like I would an axe? Thanks
I bought their sharpener for 8.00. It does the job and I can toss it in my saw box. Here is a link. http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-7861-...qid=1412780238&sr=8-3&keywords=axe+sharpeners
I use a work sharp knife sharpener. Does okay but kinda hard to get the big axe head in there I've only sharpened it once. Don't really see the need of keeping a splitting axe razor sharp
I have that Fiskars wheel sharpener. I give a few passes before each cutting session to maintain the edge. However periodically I give it a good deep sharpening the old fashioned way, put the head in the vice and go over it with 3 grits of whetstone.
I have the fiskars wheel sharpener mentioned that I use to regularly keep sharp. But the few times I've had nicks in it, I've used a file to get them out and then touched up with my work sharp belt sharpener and finally the Fiskars wheel sharpener. The X27 works best when it's kept pretty sharp!
How are you getting these nicks? Splitting on the ground? Hitting wood? I've a 3 yo Austrian maul, that I use to split rounds up on a block, that's still sharp as new. The Wetterlings maul in the avatar, same after a year+.
Mine got nicks splitting on the ground. I'm underwhelmed by the x27. I think the head design was better on the shorter handled version.
I split on a block, but sometimes the logs I'm splitting pic up gravel from my driveway and leave it on the block. I also took the Fiskars on a campout once, and everybody that used it would to stick the head in the ground when they were finished splitting. 3 different guys got a good scolding, but the damage was done.
I'm not sure how they got there. I split on a block at home and try to use a round while in the woods if I need to split some but can't say I've never hit the ground. It still splits great, just would like to get them out and keep it sharp and looking good. Thanks for the replies, I may look at one of the sharpeners but may need to take a file to it.
Take the guide off, pivot the belt so it coverts into a belt grinder and free hand it. Works much great.
I don't know if you'd be happy with it or not. The super split was a better head and didnt seem to get stuck as easy.
I have the x27, but after using it a year I started choking up a little on the handle. Seems then I could get more speed and it split better. I was actually going to get an x25 this winter, but I went the hydraulic route instead.
ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!!! Additionally, I think a heavier head would help the X27 tremendousely ................. maybe an X29 ???? The X27 is just too light and gets stuck too much
