I’m new to a fireplace insert , always had a free standing stove before . Any tricks to getting more heat out a fisher grandma bear? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A Grandma is freestanding not an insert. Unless it’s been cut up and modified. Do you have the insert or a Grandma? More heat or more efficient? A with good wood and a good chimney a Grandma Bear should be able to just about melt the walls if your run it a little harder than normal. I heated with a Fisher for over 30 years until just a couple weeks ago. I’ve been around and used Fishers all my life, neighbored with Bob for a few years in the middle 90’s. They are wood eating, heating monsters. I put a fiber/ceramic board in the Papa as a baffle. It didn’t heat more, but it did heat faster. The wood went a little farther too. Heat was also directed to different spots on the stove. A pipe damper will also help you dial things in a little better too. Owl
That’s the insert. This should get you some reading about baffles for a while. Lots of info here. Welder Dave has good pictures. https://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/search/58542196/?q=Baffle&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=14 Owl
Sorry, late to the show. As our Mr. spotted owl said, that is a Insert. Most Inserts were the standard size of a Grandma Bear, just deeper inside for the (insert) part of it. With a little work, you can really get some awesome heat from it. If you want to look into a baffle, I have some pics up that were posted. On that unit, you (should) have a flue damper that will act similar to that. I've been Burning a Grandma Fisher since 1981 in this house and as a kid, my Parents had one of the first few produced in PA. in 1976. Let me know what you want to do and how you want to burn that. There are some great Fisher knowledge folks on the forum and we'll get ya right!
