Got pretty lucky with straight logs and free handing the first cut. Need to get a ladder or rail for first cut setup next. White oak smells amazing compared to red oak. Hope to do some live edge shelves with these thicker slabs, not sure what to do with the longer skinny pieces. I’m using a 45cc saw with a 24” bar using 3/8 low profile skiptooth chain. Works surprisingly well at 30 degrees. Will file down to 10 degrees eventually though. Wish oregon made 10 degree file guides for milling
Awesome chunez! If you have access to some old latex, paint it on the ends to help reduce checks and splits.
Those are sweet. Great job going freehand. Yeah i like white oak aroma over red oak. Chestnut oak my favorite. My Oregon filing guide has 35*, 30* & 10* stamped on the top. Ill have to get pics and post.
After I planed that white oak crotch that wouldn't split I told myself if any nice straight white oak logs with a crotch turn up I will buy a chainsaw mill. Well, one week later that's exactly what happened! Had to fast track my purchase and just picked up a timber tuff from fleet farm. Seems to work pretty well but once I get my 70cc saw I will be looking at getting extension rails or another mill to accommodate a 36" bar. Already got the ends Achorsealed, stickered, stacked and drying!
Another tip if I may suggest. Mix your gas a little richer with oil (I do 40/1) and tune it a little fat, so it 4-strokes sooner. The main bearings will thank you later.
