Got up this morning and it was 39 degrees in East Tennessee. I finally got the opportunity to fire up our new stove. I'm new to the stove world but I had it up and going in about 10 minutes. I'm already reaping the rewards from the heat it's putting out.
Good looking setup, Joe! That Buck fits right into your beautiful hearth. It should certainly keep you toasty what with cold weather coming. Keep us posted with your experiences and any learning curve about the system and wood fuel and so on, eh?
Take us with you while you're learning. My SisIL needs a stove or an insert, so I've been trying to pay more attention when these kinds of posts come up. Every little bit of knowledge helps.
Well my first question...looked around the house and there's smoke everywhere. Not sure why but now I'm airing the house out. Oh well. It's a learning process. Any ideas why?
Sometimes it takes a cold stove and chimney awhile to get a draft going. Try cracking a window open to help pull the air up the chimney.
What is your flue detail? - masonry, stainless, insulated, diameter & length? Have seen lots of posts about folks' (when stove & flue are cold) methods to warm the flue before starting a fire. Flue's gotta be warm to draw smoke out of the stove.
22 ft stainless flue 6 inch in diameter. It actually looked like there was smoke coming out of the blower vents. But I really don't think that's possible. I think that may have just been paint fumes being burned off but there was smoke in the house.
Nice stove! I'm switching from an open fp to to an insert this season. I'm thisssss close to getting mine. Did the fire stay small, or get big quickly?

It didn't take long for it to get big. I had to back it down because it eventually got the house to 77 degrees. But I felt like I had great control over the size of the fire.
Joe, I hope you are right in that the smoke is from the paint, which is normal with a new stove. I would try another very small fire to see what happens then go from there. If it is lack of draft, you can pre-heat the flue somewhat with a hair drier, usiing newspapers to heat it up, etc.
It's going to be cold again tomorrow so I will definitely try it again. I will post the results on here. I'm really hoping it will be fine. It definitely was a paint smell and not really a smokey smell (sounds wired I know) but it wasn't a smokey smell.
