trailer 4.jpg trailer7.jpg Finally got tired of loading wood by hand so I made the trip to my buddies farm to get my trailer back. I bought this on craigslist for $300 2 years ago. I added the top side rails, the post and winch, and the truck box. Works out pretty good. The bed is 5' wide by 10' long. That's all usable room inside, no wheel wells to deal with. If I blow a tire I am screwed since I don't have a spare yet.

Nice trailer iceman, the hoist has got to make life easier. Looks like it will haul a full cord, thats a good setup.

That looks like an old military "split" rim.

I may have steered you wrong. Your wheel looks like the wheels on my old mil. trlr. I just checked my old pics and mine are 5 lug instead of 6 like yours. Similar & both "split" but the lugs…

I am not sure of the origin of this trailer. The tires remind me of the ones we pulled behind a deuce and a half in the Army. I got it from a guy in Michigan who used it on a farm to haul wood. I bought the jib crane with a hand crank winch from Harbor Freight, cut the hand winch off and welded a 2000# bad lands winch on, also from Harbor Freight. I use a separate 12 volt deep cell battery most of the time to run it. I figured to lift rounds it would work fine. I got the log tongs years ago from Northern. I know my back is thanking me tonight, LOL. It is a heavy trailer, so it should take quite a bit of abuse doing wood.

Why do a double line pull vs single?

Edit: how quick is it? I've been looking to rig something up exactly like this. Same winch and such at the least.

I don't know what iceman's particular reason is, but if I'm lifting or loading something precarious or heavy, I'll use the double line to slow the movement of the piece for control. In this particular case, I don't think it'd matter because there just ain't a lot to get hurt loading rounds. The actual pull on the winch seems to be easier due to the lower noise level during the lift/drag....but it will run twice as long to do the job.

My thinking may be skewed, but I figured it was less load on a cheap winch, maybe my physics is off ,LOL. As far as speed, it takes maybe 10-15 seconds to lift it. I use a 2 wheel cart with pneumatic tires to get everything to the trailer. Most of my scrounging is from people taking trees down and they don't want their yard torn up by dragging it with a winch. As far as quickness goes, My L5 vertebrae is shot, neurosurgeon is holding off as long as pain meds keep working, so the winch is a way to prolong the possibility of getting cut, LOL. It is way quicker at the end of the day than if I had to load by hand.

The boom will extend out more than what I have it, but it lessens the lift rating. I get more height by pumping the bottle jack handle on the boom if I am lifting a big piece. So far we have had this set up on a 1966 Chevy dump bed and, and I used one next to a low sitting home made splitter, they have handled everything I have run across here in Northern Indiana. I have lifted 55" diameter oak, with a lot of creaking and groaning, but it lifted it into the truck.

It's a simple and effective set up, and if it protects your back then stay with it!:)
My wife said, "Honey, you need to build one like that so I don't have to come home a day early from visiting my family!"

It really is a game changer for me. I have seen the same thing "hillbilly crafted" for a Reese hitch receiver on a pick up truck. An old fella wanted to burn wood and this was how he lifted it into his pick up truck. I have seen them welded on the back corner of a pick up also. Might just be a lot of "Hillbilly engineers" in my neck of the woods to! LOL.
