I didn’t know if I should post this in the axes/mauls forum so sorry if this is the wrong spot…. are those drill bit firewood splitters pieces of junk or do they actually work? I couldn’t find a thread or post about them. I recently moved and don’t have access or room for wood splitter. Have been tempted to try these gimmick drill bit firewood splitters but feel their just that.. a gimmick and don’t work. Any advice or experience would help please .
When this type of splitter came on the market it did not take long to ban it because people got injuries. Now I see the latest is one for the drill bit. I don't doubt they would work on some wood, especially if the log is short. But the longer the log and the tougher the splitting I'm sure would leave you wanting a bit more. I don't know the cost but if not too bad one could give it a try. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has tried one.
I watched some videos and it looks like it is good at making kindling out of splits but not much more than that.
Ya all the reviews I read basically say the bit gets stuck in the wood lol the videos make it seem decent but idk if I want to waste my money. Same with those kindling splitter pieces, with the blade that faces up and u put a piece of wood on it and chop it down thru blade to make kindling
So I use a screw splitter that I made myself. It has a 7 1/2 hp Baldor motor and a 5:1 gearbox. I can assure you that it takes way more torque to split most logs than any hand held drill will provide.
They work, but have you ever had a drill bit fetch and experienced Newton's third LAw of motion ? Really not the best tool(s)for the job.
I have been thinking for a while about making a hand held splitter with 2 counter rotating screws of equal pitch using bevel gears to allow the screws to mate. Think pointed shovel shape. Been gathering parts for a while now.
Well that's the coolest contraption I've seen in a while. Is that like a giant NPT thread on the bit? Also, what's that underneath the bit, a guide block to counteract the leverage effect? EDIT: It looks like a splitting wedge welded to the table.
Atom splitter, that is who I bought the cone and tips from. It was special as I didn't want the 2nd cone and I also wanted a blank end.
ive split some pretty big sugar maple stumps with it besides firewood....i had a huge sugar maple butt...all nasty and knarly but some of it was punky so it kinda sunk in before hittin solid wood and wouldnt split...so i puts it in reverse and dontcha know the tip unscrewed.....a full tank of fuel later in a 372 and i got the tip out
The cone is 4" diameter 12" long with 1/2" pitch square thread. The battleship piece under the cone is so that nothing will get drug into the gap between the table and screw jacking up the shaft. The end of the round goes flat on the table and the screw goes into the side of the log. You don't have to hold the log once you start the screw. Super quiet and flat free wheels.
HOLY SMOKES…..those contraptions are insane. Looks like rocket launcher or something. I think we would all love a video of these devices
Pretty sure you crazy fuks are posting....nevermind, I think the splitter the OP was thinking of would be run by a hand tool drill! Could be wrong!
Just look at "Atom splitter" on YouTube. Then search screw splitters, then realize you watched an hour of splitter videos. Stickler made the ones that were mounted to a jacked up vehicle wheel, put in gear and start splitting. Bark buster made a kneecap height one with a breaks & scatters engine.
Well those beefy ones in this thread look cool but I watched a video on a small one in a hand drill - you’d freeze to death with that before you got enough wood for the stove.
