Firewood/pellet usage. How much are you going through when it gets real cold?

At these colder temperatures, around zero, I'm using two full burn chambers a day. When you do the math that is just about 12 cu.ft. a day. Multiply by 7 and that's about 0.65 full cord in a week.o_O

Now I remember last year we had several days at -20s. I would go through 3 full chambers in a day. :faint:

But I am heating a big house, two stall garage to 45, and our DHW.

At the camp I'm going through a bag of pellets a day, maybe a little more.

How much wood/pellets are you guys going through when it gets cold like this?

3-5 loads a day in the myriad. Typically 3, but 5 on these last few days when the temp outside hasnt gotten above zero.

    3 loads, 9.6cuft/day, half cord/week. too much!
forgive me but i have the oil turned on this week. working OT and away from house 16hrs/day this week. i would have to get up in the middle of my 6 hour sleep to reload. actually i am anyway to toss the baby a bottle, but would rather not take the walk to the barn to load the boiler. pick and choose battles i guess you could say. and price of oil is still coming down, $2.44/gal today. will fire back up on friday!

In these cold temps I do 3 full loads from morning till night. I load 3xs a day all season but when its warmer out I dont pack the afternoon load. I just throw 2-3 decent size splits on to keep it going until the nighttime load.

When it was below 0 and windy last year, wind chill of -30 here at one point, I burned about half a cord that week. Luckily that's not every week!

In this weather I'll do about 2.5 full loads per day. That's about 1/2 cord per week.

3 loads is at -27 below last year. LOL I love it. Wood Gun is really proving it's ability. It's only rated at 100,000 BTU. But I think it really puts out closer to 120,000. Mine is in the basement. And everything it's got goes to heating all this stuff at those temperatures! Luckily my wife gets home in the late afternoon about 3:30(Teacher) and she loads it if I'm on a work day. Working great. I will actually let the oil boiler kick for a short time this weekend and clean the chimney pipe between the boiler and outside. Then, next time it warms up I will have my guy clean the 27' of chimney outside.

I filled the wood room right to the ceiling Sunday morning and I'm down a 2'x5' section of the front pile. Wood is 20" long on average so about 17 cu.ft. in 3 days + 2-5 gallon buckets of coal.

I don't have it figured out by the day, but I typically bring in just under a face cord at a time. Normally it lasts me 2 weeks, but now that it's cold (which is in the teens for me) that'll last just over a week.

This is what we planned on burning this year for firewood. Counts are not face cord.
Shoulder Season Wood- 1.83 cord, we have .61 left for the spring.
Cherry - 3.05 cord, not sure how much is left.
Beech & Sugar Maple - 1.22 cord, most of that is still left.
Ironwood - .31 of a cord, most of that is left.

Last year we burned about 70 bags of Pellets, I'm not sure on this years count but not much.

We probably burn about one more load than normal plus we've switched to burning mostly oak now.

I'm jealous Backwoods! I've pretty much exhausted my oak, and now I'll have to wait another 2-3 years until the oak I cut this fall is ready. It's all soft maple and ash until then. :(

Things could be worst bassJAM. I've gotten along with lesser woods than that. But if that ash is good, it still should hold an overnight fire. Many times at night I'll put one soft maple in front then load with ash and it works fine. Most times I'll take a rectangular or square piece of ash for the bottom rear after raking the coals out of there. Or, use a round in the bottom rear. It works great.

Besides, maybe the rest of the winter after this week will be more to our liking.

I'm using as much of my neighbor's wood as he doesn't notice. :)

On the really cold days that I'm home about 1/5 cord a week.

When it gets down into the single digits I'm burning what seems like a metric ton a week but if you break it down it looks something like this:
    Daka firebox = 3.4 ft³, figure with coal bed = 3 ft³, 4 loads a day on average (every 6 hours) = 12 ft³/day.
    Lopi Answer firebox = 1.6 ft³, with a coal bed = 1.4 ft³, 4 loads a day (maybe a bit more) = 5.6 ft³/day

Total possible wood usage = 17.6 ft³/day or a little over 1/8th cord a day. Now I know I'm not burning that much wood because for one thing I can't pack it into the firebox to fill ever cubic inch and for another, I have a decent amount of wood left!

I'm probably burning 8-9 cf a day with the weather we had the last few days otherwise 4 ish when it is high 20's at night and low 30's during the day. It helps a lot when the sun comes out.

Brought in 5 wheelbarrow loads Monday night before that nights reload. Looks like that will last just over 48 hours.
