So last year at the end of the heating season I picked up two 4 pound bags of fatwood firestarters from Menards for $3.99 a piece. I was a bit skeptical of these things at first but I have used them all season and am loving them! I am still on the first bag and have found that it only takes one maybe two pieces of the fat wood to start the Stove from dead cold and have it roaring in minutes. for the price I don't think you can beat them. Anyhiw I was at Menards yesterday and they were marking wood stove stuff down so I picked up a bag to throw in the camper for this summer.

I've never tried them, but I really like the super cedars. I haven't used 1 single piece of paper this season. Have you ever used the super cedars Certified? Just wondering how these compare.

Yes I have used super cedars quite a bit and I would agree they are probably a slightly better product. However, For the price of these from Menards I just had a years worth of fire starting for 3.99 which is a pretty good value in my opinion. Just throwing it out there as another option since I was pretty happy with them.

How often do you have to light your stove?

Just asking Certified, because until last year I had never used any firestarters. If I see a closeout, maybe I'll give them a try.

In the early fall and spring we do quite a few small evening fires to take the chill off overnight.

Hope you didn't take that wrong as I do agree the super cedars are awesome and I really like them a lot. I just thought for 3.99 these things were a pretty good bargain.

One problem with fatwood is that one bag will be good and the next not worth a hoot. Super Cedars rock though.

The fatwood I get is split into strips about 1/2" - 1" in diameter and about 6 inches long. The bags will come with some "chunks" in them here and there. They work great and I've seen those stay viable for a long time. The chunks can be a bit more work to get going. I use them when I go camping.

I have used both and although fatwood looks better in the kindling hod, the super cedars do a consistently good job.
