https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/fiat-chrysler-buy-back-500-225530431.html So this will more than likely affect some of you. If I hadn't have sold my jeep it would've been affected.
Looks like all rams, and many grand Cherokees. It's a big deal. It's the largest fine for an automaker, besting the fine Honda got for airbag problem mishandling.
So far it is some Ram 2500s & 3500s for the steering recall/buyback... Chrysler is recalling 1.2 million trucks, including the 2003-'12 Ram 2500 and 3500, for a steering-components defect that could cause a loss of steering. Read More KaptJaq
looks like steering issues on the rams and gas tank protection on the jeeps. I remember a few years ago jeep was putting hitches on jeeps for free to protect the gas tanks, IIRC it was on Liberty's.
Here's more on it, but it looks like more details will be announced soon. "It was unclear Sunday exactly what Ram models are covered by the buyback, but documents filed by Fiat Chrysler with the safety agency show a litany of problems in two recalls of the trucks dating as far back as 2011. Some of the problems have yet to be resolved. Trucks in the two recalls include certain 2008 to 2012 Ram 2500 4 by 4 and 3500 4 by 4, the 2012 Ram 3500 4 by 2 Chassis Cab and the 2008 Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4 by 4. Also covered are the Ram 4500 and 5500 from the 2008."
It really is sad...this is all about dollars vs deaths. And this is not just a single manufacturer, they all do this !!! once too many people die then they are forced to do something by the nhtsa.
Some brands have a proficiency at doing this, while other brands had it happen and learned from the mistake.
Funny coincidence, I had a 2000 jeep cherokee with steering problems. The mechanics could not find anything wrong after it locked up while driving two different times (very scary). Third time it locked up I was in park. They replaced the entire steering column assy ($7Kish). It was a 75K mile lease over 3 years, thank god we got the maintenance package, and I am glad it was gone in 3 years.
<RANT> I'm starting to wonder, do I want a RAM that has a steering system that will lock-up suddenly and I loose control or do I want one that can be remotely hacked and somebody else takes over control? I think what I really want is my old pick-up back, 6 cyl, manual transmission, 4x4 with an am/fm radio. Period. It ran for 12 years with almost no repairs, just standard maintenance. And no "revenue stream" features like on the new ones... Subscribe to Uconnect® Access® and get everything you need within reach, from personalized entertainment to emergency services, $150/yr. Then add: Your GPS maps need to be updated, $149. Reconnect your Satellite Radio, $20/month. Do you want traffic alerts on your GPS, $10/month. Make you vehicle a wifi hot spot, $20/week +data charges. etc... All the prices outrageously high because it is "customized" to your vehicle. I can get a handheld GPS with lifetime map updates for less than the $149 they want for the map update alone... I don't think this "Internet of Things" is the direction I want to go. Next thing I know some kid, just goofing around, is going to turn off my full refrigerator as a joke. </RANT> KaptJaq
My truck is in the effected years. I'll see what happens in the next few weeks. It's an 11 model 3500 4x4.
I want a half ton truck. 6 speed maual. Manual transfer case. Manual hubs. Lockers in the front and rear. Something that CLOSELY resembles a 4BT under the hood. Power nothing. A/C. That's it. If that truck were on the market I would buy one TODAY. Edit: I want real gauges too. Not idiot lights disguised as gauges. Water, oil temp, trans temp, voltage, oil pressure, egt, etc.
I want the same thing! But with a V8 gas engine and power locks/windows! I'm somewhat stuck on my next truck being another Frontier or an F150, mostly because I can get the Frontier with a 6-speed manual.
Sadly, the nhtsa only steps in when it involves safety/deaths. first they will ask for a voluntary investigation/free fix. then when there are enough complaints they ask for a recall. When the complaints continue, then they will implement fines Chrysler really does deserve these fines for screwing their customers for so long (2003-2012 Rams have serious rust-through issues on the bedsides. There is just no reason for a 5-7 year old truck to have this kind of problem but they dont like to admit there is a problem and the nhtsa doesn't cover rust)
I think they all have strong points...and some really weak points... like 39 million ignitions... really?!? it had to get to 39 million before it was recalled?!? a lot of the fixes were just adding an extra ring between the key and key fob so the extra keys would hang straight down and swing instead of pulling sideways on the ignition key
I think I want to go back to a 1st gen dodge. Just wish they had made crew cabs with th Cummins factory.
DARN,DARN,DARN. my 2005 Dakota has lost the power steering, NOT INVOLVED! DARN,DARN, DARN. not surprised?
