I've been wanting to do a thread like this for years but continuously get sidetracked and forget all about it, so let's start it now!

There's lots of words, terms, phrases and lingo our there associated with the art and tradition of woodburning but to my knowledge there's never been a place to document it all......well, now there is! I'll get things started by one I just saw today posted by yooperdave (which most likely has been used before but that's where i saw it and I loved it......

    - "splitter litter" - the accumulated shards and slivers of wood one ends up with after a splitting session, traditionally used for kindling and/or smoker wood.

Feel free to enter any terms, acronyms, phrases or any associated lingo or sayings (even if they're regionally popular) and we'll officially have a database for the oldies and newbies here alike! Be sure to add a definition to the word/phrase or acronyms so we understand exactly what you're getting at.....

    Some examples:

"SS" (shoulder season) - the traditional starting or ending of any given burning season (usually early to mid fall, and early to late spring) where a constant fire isn't necessitated.

"C/S/S" (cut/split/stacked) - the action of cutting, splitting and stacking the wood for seaoning or storing purposes.

"GTG" (get together) - the gathering of several FHC members at a location to be determined for having fun running saws, harvesting and/or splitting and processing wood, and of course EATING LIKE KINGS, and genuinely fantastic fellowship.

You get the picture, so let's belly up to the bar and get cracking on this thread. It'll be fun and informative!

We're gonna have to obligatorily add one more in relation to trigger time.....

"Pizz -Revving" - the action of gunning the throttle of your saw repeatedly in succession of 5 to 50 or more full squeezes to get the "ugga dugga" factor up around 10 or 11.....

What an inebriated eatonpcat turns into when trying to follow a zigzagging spotlight path into his tent at a GTG (in Ohio).

A few other common terms we see and some people don't know what they mean...

"Buckin'" or "buck'n" (bucking) - the act of working a log into specified lengths (either for firewood or for lumber logs).

"Billet" - a chunk of log cut into a firewood length that will be processed into splits

"Split" - a riven piece of wood off of a billet usually made by use of an axe, maul, or mechanical splitting device.

I'd like to know how / why shoulder season started being the term used for fall / spring burning. As a non wood burning individual, this place is the first I heard that term.

I did not actually see it, but I did hear the results of one eatonpcat trying to make his way from the cabin, to his Rhino SxS, without proper lighting, after a long evening of "taking inventory" of a certain cooler...:D
I was just glad to hear that everyone was OK...

    According to the burgeoning Skynet:

They call it "shoulder season" because it's a transitional period like the shoulders of a body, sitting between the peak (high) and off-peak (low) travel seasons, offering fewer crowds, milder weather, and lower prices. The name also suggests the mild weather in these seasons allows for lighter clothing, like a jacket thrown over the shoulders, contrasting with the heavy winter clothing or summer attire worn in peak times.

I never heard of the term myself until hanging around this site.

Score: an indeterminate amount of wood procured either for cheap or entirely free, causing jubilation and urges to tell fellow hoarders about it.

Scrounge: A free score of wood obtained usually by happenstance, also causing jubilation and urges to tell fellow hoarders about it.

Honey hole: An insanely good score with mountains of wood available, requiring trip after trip to remove from the premises.

You s@ck award: Given to hoarders that obtained scrounges, scores, honey holes, power equipment, or various repurposed/raw materials worthy of envy.

FHC corporate helicopter: Preferred mode of transport for winners of you s@ck awards, identifiers of obscure firewood species, and people that hit the lottery correctly guessing the right number in the guess the weight game. Helicopter can be found on the landing pad behind the Griffin paddock somewhere in the foothills of the Appalachians in Pennsylvania.

HVBW: Acronym for highly valuable black walnut. A reference to the oft-ridiculous overestimation of the intrinsic value of black walnut logs yet to be made into lumber or firewood.

Rick: A term normally used by sellers of firewood. Not a full cord; not a face cord. No one is quite sure just how much wood is in a "rick". Varies from seller to seller.
