My reply to this post ***http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/just-hit-600-members.4605/*** got me thinking. Here at FHC we are always writing & taking pictures of "tree slaughter" I will say that 100% of us practice humane wood gathering, being downed stuff, or those of us in the tree removal industry, keeping property and lives safer. I know this time of year isn't the most ideal time to replant a tree in a lot of areas, due to the upcoming heat of the summer, but I would like to see our members do a reverse hoard, and plant a tree. We are 600 members strong, so the potential to plant 600 trees is great. I won't throw a date on here, but fill out the poll, and throw a picture on here, and show the community we just don't hoard wood, but also plant it!
I planted several Oak a few years ago, and only a handful survived. I need to take down a couple more trees in the yard, and would like to plant something to replace, or maybe transplant something from out in the woods. Wife and I just planted some roses and some smaller flowers too. Do garden plants count? I have some green beans coming up.
I'm planting a screen of evergreens this fall to provide some visual blockage of my neighbors chitty construction of his "shack", "guest shack", and "shooting house". I should take pics of these god awful things so you all can feel my pain Saplings will be ordered from the Indiana DNR for super cheap!
That sounds good, and I would like to do something similar. We are lacking greens, although they will grow well in my area, and provide more of a wind break in a specific section. Post pics when you do!
Will transplanting a sapling in my yard count? I have a baby oak tree that came up in a garden patch a few inches away from my driveway.
Planted two new peach tree and a catalpa this year-- all were replacements for winter killed trees. Added another plum, too.
I want to plant something that grows well, but not tall. I don't want anything that gets big enough to fall on my house. Back in the 80's, I planted a Japanese maple. Is is now a fine looking tree but well in control of its size. Kids got it for me one Father's Day. Now they have kids older than they were when I was given the tree.
I never whacked a tree that didn't deserve it. There are very few perfectly good trees that I've turned into firewood. 90% of what I cut is already dead...the other 10% will be dead soon or allow a healthier tree to thrive. I've planted enough trees to last 10 lifetimes on the landscape crew. Planted a dozen or so in my yard since I've moved into this house.
Planted more apple trees and a peach. Transplanted a couple walnut that came up in the wrong places. It is easy to plant oaks or walnuts. Just leave them until they get 2-6" high and move them to where you want them. You may have to water them regularly at first. In addition, it is a good idea go get rid of the grass around new trees....before you plant them. You can either lift the sod or spray roundup. I recall one time we tried to sidestep this when we put out a dozen red pines. I think 4 or 5 lived and the rest died. However, these we did not water so that may have had an effect on them too.
Actually we will be planting a couple ornamental maples in the yard this year. Prior owner had planted multiple mulberries and a "Tree of Paradise"(?) many decades ago and I've had to take all of them down over the years as they just disintegrated with age. So we're starting from scratch. Any suggestions on which maples will grow the quickest for shade?
We had planned on moving some trees out of the middle of a trail, we did plant six northern red oak last year.
