Visited Tom’s woods today(dads friend). Started on one that was a blow down. Decent size Goldilocks oak wood.

Then cut this one down. Dead standing, looked like hickory. Told dad I was going to keep it as a labor charge, lol. I don’t get much hickory. Probably save it for cooking.
    upload_2025-9-27_16-11-8.png

Then I moved on to 2 bigger oaks. This one was about 55’.

    Drama free drop.

    XS365sp did the bucking.

Next bigger one was leaning towards a heavy briar patch so I wedged the living snot out of it till it went the direction I wanted.

    Made me earn it.

This is neat to listen to.

    upload_2025-9-27_16-26-10.png

Another 50 some feet of nice straight oak.
    upload_2025-9-27_16-27-26.png

Just as I was finishing bucking that last one, it started to drizzle. I decided to pack up and go home. Considering taking the splitter in the woods and bringing splits back to the parents place.

I would have guessed that hickory to be white oak, just based on that one photo. The smell of the wood definitely distinguishes the two, though.

You might be right there after a second look. I didn’t give it more than a quick guess while there today. Wasn’t real dense cutting like hickory should have been either.

Nice firewood, I vote Oak also.

When out deer hunting I often size up trees for firewood, liking the ones of perfect size, no branches going way up. Though I like larger wood, not too big is easier to handle. Your trees qualify. It’s great use of a recently dead tree.

Picture perfect hinge (wish mine looked like that) and very cool video of gravity taking over. I've used steel wedges to force them over. Used a small saw to nibble at the hinge if needed.

Upon closer inspection I say white oak too. Heartwood looks like WO.

Took a lot to get it there but I understood the assignment, lol. If I wouldn’t have had the open canopy to let it go that slow, my hinge would have been much thinner. I started and stopped vids several times but no one wants to see 25 minutes of wedge hammering.
It was leaning pretty much straight away from me in this pic.
