I never went, but when I was stationed @ Reese AFB in Lubbock TX we'd send pilots and crew chiefs to Minot for ACE (Accelerated Copilot Enrichment) training.

Some of the guys went back repeatedly as the TDY pay was pretty good.

    The guys always said..
"There's a girl behind every tree, just no trees."

Data sounds like it supports your logic. Screenshot_20191211-181913~3.png
I wonder if there is a "dance studio" named "The Woods" or similar in Minot.

Rather than wind chill temperatures, what were the actual temperatures? That is the number that counts. Wind chill was started just to make it sound worse than it actually is.

Actually, is have to disagree on this.

When I was in Lubbock, the temps would drop low, but there was nothing stopping that wind.
    :shiver:

It could be way colder here (in NY), but not as intolerable as sitting on the flightline in 35 mph winds.

I never thought I'd be cold in Texas, I was wrong.

Really? I can do okay on a cold calm day but the wind cuts straight through me and I'm :shiver: That said I'm in normal clothes, jeans & jacket, I guess it would not be as bad in ski gear but too much of a pita to put on and take off for going to/from truck.

I routinely head out ice fishing first thing in the morning up in -20f air temperature. If it is not windy, standing outside (dressed properly), or in the fish house, it is not bad at all, even for short times without gloves unhooking fish or baiting lines. Some of our most beautiful winter skies occur during days like this.

We had a stretch up north where the daytime high temperatures were stuck at -20f for over a week. The day I was out fishing when it warmed to zero with no wind, I fished without gloves for a good part of the day. It felt like a heat wave!

One time we went out ice fishing new year's day when it was cold and windy. It was -21f when we left the cabin, then the wind came up while we were out, blowing right into our traditional spot.

We later learned the windchill that day was -59f. That time was absolutely the coldest I have ever been while out ice fishing. We were running tip ups and had a huge fire going on shore. The part facing the fire would be warm, but the other side was cut by the wind and...a burning type of cold!

I think windchill was invented to encourage people to dress for the weather. Because people aren't as smart about that sort of thing as they used to be (like when they rode horses, walked, rode in heatless carriages). People knew how to bundle up back then, and they were just plain hardier than the average person these days.

People see 20 or 30* and think that isn't too bad since just a couple of days ago it was 1*. However, they fail to take account of the 30-40 mph wind that will find its way thru your clothes - much less those that don't wear hats to protect ears.

Even my house feels windchill since it is 2x4 construction and not as tight as modern day houses (it's a whole lot better than it used to be). I will use more pellets on a 30* windy day than one that is a calm 15*.

I went to work conference in San Francisco in August one year thinking I wouldn't need a jacket. Well, I had to buy one when I was out there due to the wind and cool temperatures.

I guess I'm just old fashioned. Wind chill reports are something we never heard in my youth. Simply put, we knew when it was windy that it felt really cold...but the temperature is whatever it is regardless of wind! The weather bureau started that crap just so people could brag about how cold it was.

I also remember for many years people started putting in extra anti-freeze in their radiators. After all, the wind chill could dip to -70 or lower. That is crazy. The wind chill might be that but the actual temperature is still what one goes by.

Perhaps it has something to do also with my personality. Like books, for instance. Fiction and novels do not interest me at all. Not worth the paper it is printed on. Give me non-fiction to read. But then, I was a weird child. I really got mad when I found out there was no Santa Claus. I also remember one cold spring morning when we were out gathering Easter eggs that the Easter bunny left. I vividly remember that morning when it suddenly struck me. Rabbits have nothing to do with eggs. Another lie I had been told. And yes, that is how I looked at it; all lies.
