Picked up a fast tach today. Surprise me how conservative I've been with tuning. I'm really glad I've had the chance to here/feel what proper tuning for my saws actually is. The 7900 is an absolute beast when tuned properly. I was close on the 262xp but still short of optimum. The 346xp is also happier with its new tune. I'm still a bit short of factory spec but everything feels good and I feel good knowing for sure that the saws are performing their best and still safely tuned. Sure as hell don't want to burn up a bunch of nice saws.
A tach is a great tool to have Cory (I have the same one). Always nice to be able to confirm what your ears are hearing. I need to get some break in tanks through my 7900 from KRL and then lean it out to specs.
A tach is the BEST tool I have bought. Your saws will thank you and you will thank your saws with a great tune. I was far off on almost every saw I owned. I always liked a good "four stroke". But my good four stroke, was a very FAT four stroke! It has definitely helped my ear to better hear a good and definitive four stroke, over a Fat burble. Congrats on the purchase.
Once modded, how do you get your target RPM if factory specs are out the window? I ask because I got this info from Bryan thru Randy on the ported 372xp. However, on any saw I muff mod I tune by ear.... So how can I check my ear with the tach when the baseline moved?
Ask Randy.. He ported the saw and would know what to tune it to. He told me what to run my 460 at for the GTG and when I got home, what to run it at for "work". But even if you tuned it to factory specs? That will still probably run good and clean up in the wood. Running it in wood till it cleans up would be a safe bet as well.
I like to leave my tach on the saw when I'am out cuttin like to know what that little 346xp is up to but I'am always takin it off to check the others. I need another
I try to keep all the ported saws running close to spec. I won't tune over 14k for work by will cutting cookies.
Yes, for the new (to me) saw I did just that. 14,200 I was told is safe. But take my 346xp, where I'm the "builder" (muff mod only)... I have always done the clean up in the wood. I leave it a little fat, like to hear the occasional burble if I ease up on the saw in the cut. Some saws (and other creatures) I've modded are very hard to detect the 4-stroke. I've been told on the 346xp if not in the wood it's most likely the limited coil messing with me. Hopefully someday that girl will get a woods port and unlimited coil to solve that problem
I cant really tell when the limiter is kicking in. That's the only reason I got the tach. I put an unlimited coil on the 346 so I could be confident about the tune. For the 7900, It sounds the same @ 13,300 as is does when its hitting the limiter. The tach proved that to me. No perceivable change in sound but the tach was bouncing around from 13,000 down to 8,000.
current max rpms for my saws: 346xp-13,900 262xp-13,300 7900-13,300 They all four stroke at these tunes and clean up quickly in the wood. Anyone who has experience with these saws have recommendations for tunes for these saws? Are any of these settings higher than they should be? All saws are stock(for a couple more months anyway)
I run my 346xp at around 13800 but it does fluctuate and the 7900 I will have to check tomorrow can't remember
Sorry I haven't been able to run the 7900 family's got me busy but come tuesday I will be.I think 13300 would be good
IIRC, the OE 346XP was shipping with the factory tune well over 14k? I think they changed that with the switch to the NE.
I believe 14,700. Don't quite me. Mine is an NE. I think it would be happy around 14,200 but I'm going easy on it till it gets ported in October. It does a fine job at 13,800-13,900 anyways. The OE is a ripping saw for its size.
