Just starting to find a few, left 7 smaller ones to grow a bit. Probably more up but, I didn't feel like walking the whole woods. http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/for...9/&temp_hash=11000de9086496975740fa5d2f4f6fbd
I was thinking those at first, but they looked too dark. Must have been thinking of chicken of the woods.
In the area I live NE Illinois/SE Wisconsin, they run the gamut on color like above. I've picked almost black ones and gray ones in the past. Some have been so large they wouldn't fit into a 5 gallon bucket!!!!
Here's some I found today. It's been a wet and rainy fall so far..............perfect for 'shrooms!!!
Nice find. I have 90 lbs. in the freezer now and out of room. Friend fond a blond one on a White Oak that was as large as all those in the pic above with the paint can behind them and gave me half of it. No where to put it in the freezer so, it's mushrooms for dinner, mushrooms for supper, a few with breakfast., same thing tomorrow.
A couple more from yesterday. The beer can is for size reference. The tomatoes are the last from my garden.
Man guys, those look great! Other than a small tub full of morels this spring, I haven't gotten any all summer/fall. I usually get sulphur shells in the summer but didn't this year. I'll be on the lookout when I go archery hunting on Saturday morning!!
The "sheepsheads" grow from near the base of the "white oaks". Doesn't matter what variety of white oak around here....................don't know about other areas of the country though.
Yep.....pretty much the same here. We find sheep heads on white oaks, sulphur shells (or chickens) on red oaks..
