Never burned any but always figured it would be good stuff, since I’ve joined here the comments about it have me thinking otherwise.
Not much of it around here anyway, (yard trees mostly)
If’n I find an easy score I’ll probably try it for myself, but not gonna go out of my way for it, and hardwoods ain’t to plentiful around here

X2. I've heard several times that it makes poor firewood, terrible smoker wood, and its real value is in the woodworking world.

I love it. It makes me feel like I'm burning office furniture which I also like to do.

Black Walnut usually needs two years here to get good & dry. Then it does decent, kind of middle of the road for btu's once dry. It does make more ash than some, but it coals decently, at least in my boiler. I burn it when I get it.

It's just ok, I don't put much energy out getting it but have burnt some a time or two.

With 2 years drying it burns nice. Does leave a bit more ash than many species.

  10. i kinda like to do a little of that too to be honest

That's about right. It's low BTU, makes a lot of ashes, and your right, you'd never want to use it as a smoker wood.

Some firewood BTU charts claim 20MBTU/cord, some are a bit higher.
I've never burned any as there are none on my property beyond the seedlings some animal(s) (likely squirrels) planted in my garden last year. I really doubt I'll ever burn any of them should I find a good spot to plant them permanently.

20MBTU is fairly good by my metric(s).

I won't go out of my way for it but if it's down and easy to get to I'll take it. Burn it through the day to save the better hard woods for overnight burns.

I personally like the stuff... Love the smell of splitting it... Season's fairly fast... and its good shoulder season wood... Plus I seem to get it quite often...

It’s ok, I have some in my stacks. Neighbor has 3 16” he wants cut down that I’ll get. It’s good shoulder wood. I also like burning it in the fire pit. I’ve heard of people cooking over a fire with it. The stuff is pretty darn durable out in the woods. It will last a long time if it’s blown down.

Some folks have a reaction to it. Brake out in an itchy rash. I know a tree guy that wares long sleeves to do walnut tree jobs. He breaks out if the chips touch his skin. I've helped him a few times and it doesn't bother me. Anyone here have a bad reaction to it?

Nice shoulder wood. Easy to split and dries fairly quickly, never seen a bug of any type in a walnut log.

I’ve never heard of anything like that. I’ve heard the roots put off a toxin, my experience with that is I tried to plant flowers around the base of a walnut years ago and they didn’t do well. They were mostly hostas, they barely stayed alive.

Never had the “pleasure” of dealing with it. One of those tree species you hear mostly bad things about like Willow, and Sycamore. No real desire to even try it.

Great for campfires. Splits easy, smells good when burning and has an attractive blue flame.

Not so hot for stoves, it turns to coal and then doesn't give off much heat and has a lot of ash.

The best thing is people go nuts when you tell them you are burning black walnut. DSCF0005.JPG DSCF0004.JPG DSCF0006.JPG
