Borrowing a meme yooperdave posted earlier, and knowing what crude oil and natural gas actually provide us and our economy…. After all- don’t 99.99% of us own chainsaws…?
Wait! That's not what i keep hearing on the tv... All you need is a 50k$ solar system and a 100k$ car and you're all set. And the government (taxed people) will pay for it even tho you're rich...
We can’t depend on our current alternative energy production levels to replace the lost oil supply, but note it is much more reliable/predictable than foreign oil.
My $20K array produces enough electricity for my house and 15,000 miles per year for my two $40K EVs and we are solidly in the middle of the middle class. Smug has a bit of an ugly connotation to it…but I certainly don’t feel bad about not having and electricity bill or a gasoline bill for the next 20 years!
I had heard the American oil and gas was expensive to produce, and they cut back production, which is why we can't rely on it today, although I'm sure they are eager to jump back in at these prices. It is a bit obvious to see whose pockets will get lined in the short term, when WV and AK are at the front of wanting to stop all Russian imports. Makes me want to opt out of that system (which is largely why I burn as much wood as I do, so I don't screw up the US with fracking, and don't fund the foreign energy wars). Solar is a definite next step for me.
Not trying to be a smart a$$ because I don't really know, how long do the batteries last before they need replaced (for house and EV)? And can you pull a loaded down trailer and haul other stuff with your EVs?
Expense wasn't the reason production was cut. The current president caved to political pressure and restricted production.
I’m happy for you. However there are definitely some subsidies in those prices. Plus the (here) $.40 a gallon tax 1/2 fed and 1/2 states for roads upkeep. problem with subsidies is they are not sustainable once enough individuals start using them.
There’s a downside to everything, even going green. Child labour, toxic leaks: the price we could pay for a greener future
8-10 years and 100K miles battery warranty for the cars, it’s a federal regulation. Their towing capacity is 2000 and 3500. The battery warranty for our house backup is 10 years. FYI I did not include the house battery in the prices because it is not necessary to have a battery for the system to work it is an extra we splurged for.
I will receive a total of $22K in tax subsidies for the PV solar and two cars. The prices I gave are after subsidies. The subsidies argument against solar and EVs is BS IMO, every major industry gets subsidies.
This is not my area of expertise, but when I look at charts of US production, they appear to coincide exactly with the pandemic (sudden, steep drop, followed by a increase since then). I still think I've read that fracking is expensive and they have been slow to increase production in part because of that. The Great Shale Fracking Slowdown Has Arrived U.S. Shale Boom Over?
