New stove, 2nd one. Non epa englander. Maple and cherry is nice and dry, checking 9-12%. I’m still trying to get a handle on burn times and temps. If I aim for good temps it seems I don’t get the burn times. My single wall pipe I’ll load it up and let it get to 400-440 and I’ll shut the door and leave the drafts wide open. It will calm down to about 300 and then slowly rise back to 400 or so then it falls off down to mid 2’s after an hour. I have good draw with a 20 foot tall masonry chimney with tile liner. I don’t really feel comfortable letting it get any higher than 450 outside pipe temp but that temp seems to fall off rather quickly and I don’t want to be coming up and down every 20 min to make sure it’s not 500 or 200. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is this when you are loading on hot coals? If so I'd say to not leave the door open so long...or at all really...damper(s) wide open should be plenty...then cut those back a bit sooner too. Other than that I'll defer to actual 28-3500 owners.
As far as monitoring your temps, I use a Maverick ET-732 wireless remote BBQ thermometer to monitor both my supply plenum and stove pipe internal temps...cheap enough and will run all winter on a set of batteries...saves a bunch of trips up and down the steps...especially when you are trying to figure out a new setup. Have mine sitting right next to me now...and I can see based on temps that I'm about 1 hour from time for a reload.
A bonus for me is that you can set high and low alarms on both probes separately...helps me sleep better at night knowing I have an alarm if something too crazy goes on down there...I mean my family is sleeping right above this fire in a box! Smoke and CO alarms help too...
I agree that 450* external pipe temp is plenty!

Thanks for the input. Just trying to find more burn time while keeping It above 250 so it won’t build creo!

Apparently my splits are too dry but they are maple. I may try some type of rounds tomorrow. I have some hickory out in the woods stacked that’s a year old. It should be dry enough to try. What I’m burning now is being gobbled up. May mix on a green round with it. I’m trying all kinds of stuff. Lol

Yeah Maple burns hot! Especially Silver...I like it, good to mix in with other wood...not so much a full firebox of it.
