My 09 Subaru outback suddenly overheated along with the heater not working in the car. I immediately thought thermostat, so i replaced that along with burping the system. It seemed this helped, but when i test drive it, while going down a hill, the heater stopped working again until i turned around and went back up the hill. I drive a little further, then the engine overheated again with my heater not working. I feel i burped the system enough. There's a chance the thermostat was crap out of the box and i should have tested it before i installed it, but i didn't. Going with the cheapest things first, I'll replace the radiator cap next, although it looks good, you never know. Another thing i can think of (and hopefully it's not) is the head gasket, but I'm not seeing any mayonnaise looking film on the radiator cap,the overflow tank or engine oil dipstick. Maybe a bad water pump.......???? Any mechanics have any thoughts? Thanks!
Looks good, no seperating fluids as far as i can tell. Belt is turning, so unless the shaft broke inside, I'd figure the pump is turning...... Major service as in timing belt and water pump, not yet Like i mentioned in the first post, not seeing that mayonaise junk on any caps.....
It can go the other way too though. Antifreeze in the crankcase. Depends where the head gasket fails. Hopefully it's"just" a water pump or less. Any puddles anywhere?
I don't own, or haven't owned a Subaru, but that's pretty normal time for a water pump to be replaced
Not seeing any different fluids in the oil, normal exhaust for the outside temps, no extra "fog" coming from the exhaust
Get a long handle screw driver and listen too water pump with engine at idle.. just because belts moving if impeller on inside gone not moving enough fluid through heater core
Yeah but how is they don’t replace timing belt, water pump, pulleys and belt Horkn they are 22% of vehicles on road in my state so you get to know them
I've had head gaskets where all it will do is leak just enough combustion pressure to over- pressurize the cooling system and push coolant out With newer multi layer steel gadkets they seem to no always act like the old fiber ones
I know, but Im not seeing any evidence of that, but could be Im just trying to go cheapest fix first... If i have that work done, ill have them do all that
I think my cummins is doing that. Lots of gurgling when i shut it off. Intermittent heat last week. Still full of water.
