so i plan to have my boiler room in barn be a bit of a workshop. its nice to have a warm room in the winter to bring a project into. room is 9'x34' and only 78" high. thats the boiler in the back left. still gotta redo the electric. cieling is easy. 10' fire rated sheetrock and done. back wall also to be fire rated sheetrock as well as first ten feet of left wall next to boiler. i will have to add some framing here. now that left wall is on 40" centers. the supports for the roof are 10' apart and previous owner added two 2x6s vertical in between. my thought is to get 12' long knotty pine to span that 40" without framing more. seems to be about the same price as full sheetrock plus framing on 20" centers. close enough to 16" and easy to just split the diference and be done with it. right wall is 16" centers. sheetrock the lower 4' and knotty pine the rest. this should match the left wall and be nice to hang stuff from above workbenches. thoughts? comments? suggestions?
I like the pine, will it expand and contract due to changes in humidity? I also like using metal roofing/siding in a shop area. Looks like a fun job!
its T&G so i think it would do alright. i thought about doing the lower half of that left wall (and then the right as well) with corrugated steel but i have not been able to source anything cheap locally. galvanized would be nice. think this would be stiff enough to span that 40"?
Did the same thing in our old barn. Close to the same size too. You're right… it sure was nice to have a heated area to work in when it was howling at 10 below. Looks like you've got it well thought out.
i do but have only looked online. will stop by. on home depot website all i can find is plastic or the clasic rib roof panels. i do not like the look of them for this room. found these at lowes. might go this route for 48" from floor. http://www.lowes.com/pd_12475-28906...=1¤tURL=?Ntt=corrugated+steel&facetInfo=
A buddy of mine did a room similar to yours in rough sawn 1"x10" polar,,he claims it was the cheapest alternative. It really came out nice and has a warm comforting appeal.
Here's an idea...not sure if it is a good one, but 1/2" ACX is pretty nice looking and fairly cheap if you want some wood on the wall. Rock the lower 48", that leaves you with 30". Rip a sheet of 1/2" ACX to 30" and use the remaining 18" to make shelves.
that was my original original idea. the problem with that or other plywood types is i have anly been able to find it in 8' lengths. that gives me a problem on the left wall 40" OC. would need to frame more so the seams falls on a stud. with the 12' corrugated and knotty pine i think i should be able to get away with that 40" span. anyway, hope to gut, re-wire, and get ceiling up this weekend. maybe fixtures too...
http://www.lowes.com/pd_102399-99899-1101029_0__?productId=3602414 hmm...that would be half the price of knotty pine if they have it. i like it!
got started this weekend. the whole barn was only one circuit. rewired with seperate lighting and outlet breakers. they originally mixed 12 and 14 wire so it was more work than expected sorting that out. outlets every 10' on the left wall, 4' on the right. cieling is up. see before and after pics. the back by the boiler isnt really as dark as it looks in the pic, the lights are just that bright up front. should be really nice when its done. gotta get the wife new double front doors for the house and i will repurpose the old ones. i have a door for the opening to the right of the boiler. need to frame it myself if i cant source one otherwise. still figuring out what to do with walls. neither lowes or home depot can/want to order the 10' plywood for me. nor does the one lumber yard i stopped in at.
Wouldn't be much work to add more vertical framing and open your options up. I like where you are going with this!
i think that is what i am going to do. due to budjet constraints, i have been pondering just using OSB. would give it a coat of polyurethane or similar. putting this off too long but been busy elsewhere.
