Some friends of mine (would be inlaw's if my flipping kid would pop the question) own a resale shop. He calls to offer me a 7 month old saw for a song. Well I sang, like most of this chorus here would.
So I tear into it to do a muffler mod thinking it would have a cat to gut. I was surprised to find a empty can with a exhaust port with a deflector welded over it. It looks like the port is already bigger than the carb so what now ? Caps from the carb are in the trash. Anyone mod one of these ??

    A look at the Piston
    IMG_20190217_140127837.jpg
The saw came with some cans of vp 40-1 fuel supposably only had one can's worth of run time.
    Thanks for any advice.

I'll give you some advice: Send it here & I'll break it in for ya! Nice find. Muffler empty & port not restricted, tune it & run it like ya stole it! If it needs more send it for a port job. Those seem to be really solid saws.

I'm no saw builder, but I have ran an echo 800 before. Put that gutted muffler back on and tune her in. Those saws remind me of the old McCulloch or pioneer saws from the eighties, lots of torque! It will pull a 32 or 36 inch bar with full comp in softwoods with no issues. They don't have the chainspeed of the Stihl or Husqvarna or dolmar. Cs800 is kinda heavy but I think one would last a lifetime if taken car of.

I already have 2 cs8000's the grey ones. No issues in over 20 years with either EXCEPT for the flipping chain brakes !! Those have been in a drawer for about 20 years !! On this one the brake is mounted on the clutch cover itself so that's a big improvement. Also the new style cylinder and piston. Still the crappy air filter though.

Actually the 8000 will pull a 36" full comp semi in hardwood no problems. I'm only thinking that this should be better.

Yes! 30% or more power & speed in the cut for the same weight.

Kevin aka huskihl has done two for me & they're great runners. Mastermind is world famous as well. I've got an 044 he did & it's a great saw too. Not sure he does anything but new saws though.

I think it varies on different saws. My two smaller saws l had less than $500.00 into. The 044 I bought ported. Well worth doing on a known healthy saw imo.

The man of hour !!!! What are your thoughts on this ? I haven't run it yet as I took to dumping the fluids and minor disassembly for inspection, limiter cap removal ect. I don't expect any issues though. I'm hoping to get it together this weekend and fire it up set the carb ect.

Sounds like a great place to start.
I haven't handled an 800. I'd venture to guess they're a larger brother to the 670/680, which I've ported a few of. A bit heavy compared to saws from Stihl and Husky, but build quality is 2nd to none. Taken care of, I think they'll last forever.

I don't carry them around all day so the weight doesn't bother me. I have the 680 also as my small saw no issues at all. I like metal.....lots of it. I'd really like to port it myself but while I have the tools I don't know squat on what I'm after. I'm intrigued with the idea of sending it out though. Might have to schmooze the war department a bit. My son the traitor said to her "I don't understand why he bought a 3rd one"
