Echo CS-355t muffler mod and review

A campfire brother of mine dropped this little guy off the other day for me to give a try. I'm sure he'll weigh in if he feels like it.

Scotty Overkill seems to like his so I was considering picking one up as my old 020t was held together with duct tape and bailing wire.







Fit and finish are good and this seems like a solid unit for the money.





Filtration could be a little better...



Since I'm going to muffler mod this saw these carb adjustment limiters have to go!





That's better! I was able to fish these little bits out with a drywall screw and an inspection pick without removing any of the saw plastic.

Edit: to gooderize muh spellings 'n' stuffs.

 

The can itself is wide open but that deflector is really limiting airflow!

This was 6" tulip poplar. Would have liked a good hard wood like Ash, but didn't have anything else small enough to test on.

The videos don't show much of a gain as far as faster time. But the saw definitely felt stronger in the cut and certainly seemed to be breathing better!

Edit: forgot to mention wood diameter is getting larger with each cut.

 

Scott the saw picked up some acceleration and power and it's definitely breathing better. I think the muffler mod would have shown better in timed cuts in bigger harder wood.

I'd say worth it since the mod literally took 20 minutes. Easiest one I've ever done!

 

Saw looks good Brad! Seemed a little snappier and you were able to push on it pretty good.

I need to drop off more saws...

Scott I have a feeling the rev limited coil on this saw will limit any gains that way. Echo's don't usually like an advance in timing. Honestly I don't think it really needs it. I leaned on it pretry good and I couldn't stall the saw out!

 

Solid dependable saws! I love my Echo 501p!

 

So there was no honeycomb in that muffler to begin with? My 330t had one plus a baffle to hold it! Thing was stopped up tight! No clue how it even ran! How is the intake side of the saw? The 330’s had a manufacturing oops from what I hear and the plastic intake was half the size of the carb port! A little dremel and some super fine sand paper cleared that out!

 

Nope the can was wide open except for the restrictive deflector. I didn't get a chance to dig into the carb/intake. But it sounds like its worth a peek. I do know that the coil is limited I could hear it bouncing off the limiter when I leaned it out.

 

That’s more gooder about those mufflers! Two guys at work just bought them and are itching to bring them to me

 

I have to take those carb limiters off my cs-352, it's hard to get a screwdriver in those slots with the saw Running

Nice score Joe! I like the 355 but don't get to use it much with the stihl 201 and echo 2511. That little 2511 is a ripper!

I paid the princely sum of $279.00 for my Echo CS3400T circa 1998. I just used it on Saturday. The coil went bad at one time...lifetime ignition warranty...no charge. I did also put all new rubber and a carb kit in it a few years ago. 20 years of dependable service for me so far. Echo is OK by me.

5.2lbs, 25cc. Held one at the Bunyan last year. You'll chuckle the first time you heft one.
