Ok, I admit it, I haven't hauled a stick of wood in the new truck just yet. But I did pick up a slick new tonneau cover for it and a set of WeatherTech floor liners. I really like the floor liners but this cover is handy enough I thought I'd post up some pics for others that might be looking for something similar. The cover mounts like a between the rails roll-up, and functions like one with one important difference, the front 1/3rd will fold back allowing access to the front of the truck bed without spelunking from the tailgate end. It's been dirty and washed a few times already! The wife gettin' pizzed for the $$ spent at the car wash.... Darn black trucks.....
Looks good. I've been looking for something for my truck. Wife wants a fiberglass topper, I want a folding tonneau. Toppers seem to need to be off more than on. I had a soft tonneau on my old truck (not folding, a snap on) quite a few years ago and it shrank to the point of being unusable after 2 years. It's now a cover for my wood stacks. I'm not sure if I had a bogus cover or if that was the nature of the beast.
I had an inexpensive snap cover from Downey Products on my 2005 Canyon. 9 years and it still looked good and no shrinkage. Their snap system is the best I've seen. This cover is a bit more "upmarket" than that one was and carries a lifetime warranty. Why does the wife want a fiberglass topper? Had a couple of those way back and you're right, they are a major pain to swap on/off. This cover also allows you to roll up the cover and unlatch it from the frame if you want to completely remove it. The tri-folds are nice, easy to install too. But if you need to completely remove it, you have to do it at home or find room in the cab/bed. No good for that impromptu scrounge!
I think she wants a fiberglass topper because she misses her SUV. I had a topper on my S-10. Seems every time I put it on I had to take it back off. PITA. I'll check that brand cover out. I'd pretty much ruled out a soft tonneau based on my past experience. Good to hear I may have just had a dud.
Thanks for posting Mech. I'd like to cover the bed of my Silverado too after shoveling out snow all winter. I was thinking about making something but your's looks a whole lot better and seems easy to use. Now… about that chuckin wood in there…
Yeah, being able to go to the grocery store on a rainy day and not shoveling out the truck (I use an electric snow blower if it's deep. ) are good motivators eh? Also the truck now does over 60-65 without feeling like I'm towing a parachute behind me so hopefully I gain a couple MPG from the deal as well.
Look for a lifetime warranty on the covers, not just the frames. That helps indicate the quality of the material.
Nice Tonneau cover MM. They have come a long way in the last 15 years. My BIL has one like that on his Chevy. I live it... mine has been off my truck for over a year. It's a PITA to get back on and I don't use my truck enough to use it for mileage. Congrats man. She is looking good.
The Downey Products SST is the best "cheap" cover I've come across. I've had two, one on my old S-10 and one on my Canyon. They are between $2-300 bucks depending on the truck, a cinch to install and I was able to get it on/off regardless of temperature. The plastic snaps held up to 9 years of on/off fairly frequently too. The only thing I've found easier to install/remove are the tri-folds but they are more $$ and will not allow you complete access to the bed unless you remove the cover completely. If you are not at home, then you have to find somewhere to stow the cover. I did not mention in my initial post that once my cover is rolled up, I can pop two latches underneath and remove the rolled up cover completely leaving only the rails on the truck.
