Local Marriot gave me permission to take this tree. Stopped by quickly to check it out. I don't know what it is but it's pretty big, maybe 26" in diameter my best guess. Didn't have any tools with me. Anyone know what it is? The bark ridges are big and the top of the trunk has rotted a bit. The meat looks whitish.....perhaps a Norway maple? Not sure until I slice into it. According to the head engineer it took out a pickup truck when it fell and has been down for 2 years. Here's a video of it. Click on the link to see the video. anyway to get a few more pics especially of the wood itself bud srry i wasnt able to look at the vid i aint got dropbox
I don't see any sign of EAB activity.....but that doesn't mean it's not ash either.....although every other ash tree I've seen has had signs.....
No but the engineer was very excited that I offered to clean it up for free. Plus it's literally 3 minutes from my house so I'd rather sleep in my own bed. Heh heh.
Very hard to tell. Could be Eastern Cottonwood.... Could be any number of trees really. As the old adage says, it'll burn.
I scrounged some eastern cottonwood on the side of the road and yes the bark is very similar to the pic as well as ash.... I'm sure I'll be able to tell by smell once I make the first buck. That said, I can't wait for my Stihl parts to arrive. I could totally test out the 028 on this tree!!!
Well I know what cottonwood smells like (i.e. cat pizz) and what white and red ash as well......poplar has those nice distinctive green highlights in the wood...The end of the tree where the bark is all gone - the meat was very white even though it has greyed naturally.....
I’ve never had cottonwood but it looks like cottonwood. LOL Now there’s an opinion you can take to the bank. Can clean the counter with it anyway.
I've heard enough grumbling about cottonwood from our members in the plains states that I want no part of it... unless someone dropped some off at my house already bucked, split, seasoned 2 years/verified with a moisture meter... then I'll try some in the outdoor pit
From the guy hunting conifer! Haaaaaaa. Just teasing. Don't knock CW until you try it. Bet it works just fine for ya. You never know until you give it a try!
I WOULD give it a shot if I ever came across a convenient score of it. Looking at my stacks I do have plenty of wood that most people wouldn't bother with (Mimosa, aspen, etc) I think it was Sandhillbilly that was lamenting a while back about going after what he thought was a dead elm that turned out to be a cottonwood, and then decided it wasn't worth his trouble. I'll give it a shot someday. My next door neighbor has one towering over his backyard, that sways wildly in the wind. Only a matter of time before it comes crashing down and then I'll finally be able to savor all that mediocre firewood for myself!
That swaying in the wind is normal for cottonwood! It is a soft wood that bends (and warps easily) but that is one of its strengths. But it can also rot fast when down.
Pretty sure it's cottonwood. Cut into it and it has that soft fuzzy texture to it. Still a little moist but doesn't stink like green cottonwood. Gonna take two truckloads.
