Just a pic of a nice Douglas Fir log about to become firewood. This one can not be sold to a lumber mill because it is in a campground and will (more than likely) have nails/screws in it. Like this one, which I hit yesterday in a different tree.
Nice straight tree. What is the typical size DF you harvest BB? Too bad about the nail! Casualty of hoarding a i call it!
Hey Brad, Most of my own fir trees are 18" to 24"diameter at breast height, but the ones down the road like this run 36" to 50" and more.... and 150' tall - with rounds just too big to wrestle with. They (Corps of Engineers) give away the wood, it's level, and I (just like you!) can't pass it up. I have a 90" stump at my place. Wish I could have seen that one! That nail was a funny one, never skinned one long ways before. Buzz
Cant imagine trying to work rounds that big. I recently cut 36" oak and what a PITA alone with no equipment. I was thinking if ive ever hit a nail that way and cant recall.
Wow! They let you cut trees in a campground on Oregon? LoL I'm sure you have permission from somebody. Is that cottage grove lake? Nice tree, there is lots of nice doug firs and maples over there. They get alot taller than the doug firs east of the cascades.

Hey Tamarack! Yes, it IS Cottage Grove Lake! Wouldn't expect many people here to recognize it as such. Yes, they have trees that die or that they've decided for whatever reason to cut - we don't fall our own. And, I've been fortunate to get way more than my share simply because I live next door, show up when I say I will, and clean up after myself. Our trees are taller, but your Junipers smell better and burn so nicely. I love your slice of heaven over there. Another stick or two... but they add up.
Dang, with the price of lumber nowadays . Could get some nice boards outta those huge, straight Fir. But it'll burn nice!
Found that one! Must be nice to just whack all the branches off and have one nice long trunk to turn into firewood. These hardwood trees here make for some great firewood, but there’s no lack of work turning one into firewood How many trees are you taking o it of that campground? How much firewood do you think is in a pile like the one in the pic? Looks like a sweet place to camp
Hey Buzz, you gotta love Doug. If I could only burn one species of wood it would probably be DF. In your pile, some of it seems to be seasoned already or standing dead, surely not from that tree?
Hi Halftacut! I got 6 or 7 this year, none being larger than this last one, but there are a couple of guys who ended up with mighty big trees, maybe I'll go get a photo of them, if I do, I'll add it here. There are several campgrounds on this one lake. There is only about 3 or 4 cords in that pile, judging a loose, tossed pile can be deceiving. That would be an interesting debate - "Do FHC hoarders prefer the the ease of straight conifers over the awesomeness of hardwoods?" I have a mix off my own property, but never enough hardwood to do anything but hoard it and hold it back for cold nights.
Ah! GREAT eyes, metalcuttr, but it is from that tree! We are having a bug kill (along with drought and overcrowding) that tends to kill trees from the top down - and you correctly noticed that the higher cuts from that exact tree are indeed dead and even have some rot - from a hundred feet or so up. I tossed those on that pile this morning. Down below that yep, it's live, fresh, and green. Some trees take years to die, but they all seem to, once the borers get to them. We used to hunt a place called Brummet Creek, and I knew there were really big Doug Firs there, but when they found the Finnegan Fir, I was blown away - it was 302′ tall and 13.2′ dbh.

Been ok, Doug. You??? I don't know anything about the Springfield GTG. Have to admit, it was a hell of a year - BIG fires, bad covid, ugly politics, nothing went my way, but I'm still here and healthy, so I shouldn't complain. Maybe it’s just another case of envy over what I can’t have I’d love the opportunity to process a big conifer like the one in your post, and you’d probably like a load of red oak For those really cold nights. Either way, our homes are nice and toasty each winter regardless of what we’re burning
