I have a class C (NY) water operators license for my job. I work in the maintenance department at a vocational school and we are on a well. We have to chlorinate our water and someone with an operator’s license has to oversee it.
I got a call from a hotel down the road who needs a licensed water operator. It would be a part time job or I’d be a contractor. I’m just concerned about the liability. I don’t worry about my school job because we have plenty of money and do everything by the book. I’m concerned about the hotel wanting to cut corners, especially when I won’t be there full time. I haven’t been able to find much about it online.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

I would look at it from the part-time job angle as opposed to the contractor. If you're there as a part timer, you're completely under the employer's liability coverage. If they bring you in as an outside contractor you may be required to have your own LLC and separate insurance policy.

As far as the facility possibly trying to cut corners, you have to go with your gut. Ask for their maintenance log book, compare it to their chemical purchases, see if they match up. If you feel that they are on the up-and-up, it might be a nice supplement to your income. If you don't feel like they are doing it the right way, then decline the work.

I’m approved to take the written test! It is state specific and my engineering license helped. I’m hoping to do some side jobs with it.

I have a distribution and collection license...not plant operations...and I have never done the contract thing. I thought about it, but the rules got much stricter here in Ohio just about the time I was getting started with all this, I just decided I didn't even want to deal with it...not much help to OP, sorry.

got a giggle from the title of the thread. I thought you were talking about a Pleasure Boat Operator's licence which you have to have in Canada now.
