I need a 2-car freestanding carport. I am looking at online steel construction for about 2 grand. I am also considering building it myself of wood, post (pole barn) construction.

I live in a snow area, though I do make an effort to keep it from accumulating too much. My budget is "as little as I can to get a good building." I can pull off $2000, not much more. Permits are not an issue, longevity of the structure (20 years+) and low maintenance are important.

I am handy, and can do basic construction with plans; though I have built little, I understand the concepts and have the tooling, and adequate time.

I am hoping for suggestions that will help me decide which way I should go, or new ideas. Thanks in advance for your suggestions / experiences.

For 2K, I would get the pre-engineered steel building. With Framing, siding, conc for footings, roofing, doors, etc...I think it would be a stretch to come in under 2 grand.

Thanks for the input. I am not looking for closed sides, so siding and doors are not an issue.

    Snow load factor very important.
Local truss builders & metal buildings reps should know the specs for roof structures in your area.
Here , metal / wood , metal usually cheaper , be interesting what you find for your area.

Our sled shed was under 2k building it ourselves.

It's a pre engineered steel unit, slide up garage doors front and back. It gets plenty of snow on it in winter up in the northwoods of Wisconsin. We got it at Menard's.

Then you could probably build it for under 2k... Steel still sounds easier to me!

Sorry, just reread your initial post and you want a carport. Can't even blame my mistake on beer this time!!
