Snagged a load of wood from my wife's former boss. Mostly red oak, and I grabbed a few rounds of what I assumed was white oak. No bark. Finally got around to trying to split the stuff today and my maul bounced off it. I was able to get a small split off the side and it smelled like manure, which I'm finding out now can be a characteristic of elm. I noodled the rest.

I've only read about the horrors of the species and never had any personal experience trying to process elm. Is that what I have here? Lil' help is appreciated.

Do the outside surfaces of the rounds have the characteristic elm bark beetle galleries? DED_LW-1024x768.jpg

Did it have any smells? Kinda looks like what I’ve been in but I don’t know the difference in species.

Hard to tell, but if maul kept bouncing off, noodling was a good choice. How'd your area fare with Thursday's storm outbreak? If you're looking for more c'mon over to North & East Haven. All you can cut and more. Ill help ya load and even bring an extra PU full your way!
