So, the PO of this place had some stairs on this deck, and rain/chipmunks and whatever undercut any support. One of the stairs broke.
What I'd like some advice on is how to best support whatever new steps I put in.
Here's a pic of what's left. I can get better pics.

How about some packed crushed stone for a base and pour a small concrete pad/landing?

cut new stringers and lay in place, excavate about 8 inches deep at bottom step and pour concrete as Jon suggested.

Ok, kinda what I was thinking with the base. Shouldn't need stringers, as I think it's less than a foot to grade from the deck.
Might just use a gravel bed.

I like the cement pad idea. It will never rot or become uneven.

less than a foot......form it up so the step is 7.5 inches, fill base with gravel, and pour a little slab
few bags of quickcrete and done

This is a temp fix, but I filled about leveled, tamped the dirt, then about 4" with gravel also tamped down. This shows the original setup.
Had some bricks that I put in the gravel, then laid a different slab on top.
I'm still contemplating forming up for a small pour.

One of the bricks that's under the slab. The bottom slab will probably come out and I'll just backfill with more gravel or dirt.

Looking at this some more......I might pull those steps (a 10" piece broke off the small one), and backfill enough to just put 'em both back down level with each other. That would leave about a 7-7.5" rise.....perfect.

Sure looks like it. They like to crack if not supported well.

Heavy is right, I have a patio made from salvaged limestone treads.
