I know most of you are too young, but he broke some serious ground in my youth. Sitting here with a glass of red, listening to "Heroin" from the Rock and Roll Animal album. I'm taking this harder than John Lennon and Jerry Garcia. I guess you had to be there.
I was/am a big fan. We saw him in SF and he played with his back to the audience the whole time. ...And the colored girls go, doo do-doo do-doo do-doo do-doooooooo (he was the most censored for that line)
Was that the show when he shot heroin on stage? I heard him asked about that line, he said he just needed two sylables, just that simple.
I did not see him shoot up. Though I was rather inebriated at the time myself. I recall 60 Minutes or the like doing interviews with black prostitutes in NYC, and they asked them what they thought of his Walk on the Wild Side lyrics. They all shrugged it off, and said that was what they do, and saw nothing in the song that would warrant it be censored (nothing racist, which is what the networks thought it would be taken as). I can see censoring Heroin, but not that song.
More rock news: Fleetwood Mac just cancelled their tour in Oz and NZ because John McVie has cancer. Every moment we are all closer to our death than we ever were before.
