Me, the Mrs and baby piney went up and over the river to new hope, pa. We had lunch looking over the delaware and walked along the canals. The canals have a towpath that runs along side them that mules used to pull supply barges loaded with lumber, coal, building stone and also produce. There's series of locks along the 60mile stretch and it was really neat to see one along our walk. Here's a few pics
Many years ago I was working in Montgomeryville Pa. during the week and traveling home on the weekends. Used to go thru New Hope on the way. Stopped and did the canal walk also. Bet that area has changed greatly from the last time I was there.
It's been a few years since I've been over there. Across the river in Lambertville, nj you can follow the tow path to the wing dam. It's fun to hang out and fish off of it. Some nice class III rapids there too. The river flooded quite a few times a couple years ago. A lot of damage. Peddlers village was a fun place to go when I was younger. Especially the candy store.
Looks like a fun day. The amount of canals that were built in the short time before trains came into existence is amazing. They were all over the place.
Is that where the two concrete dams stick out about 1/3 of the way across from each side? We walked right by that and there were some pretty wicked rapids just downstream.
Yes, accessible from the nj side. From what I remember, you have to negotiate the bank a little, but is accessible. Really cool once you're out there.
Looks like a nice time sightseeing on a fall day. The colors look like they are just starting to make their mark. We are only about 25% here right now
Duhh, i just realized that the pic of baby piney next to the river is facing directly at the dam. They're close. After the cold front this weekend they'll more than likely be in full swing. It was pretty grey most of the day but it cleared up towards the end of our walk.
I've been driving thru a lot lately on my way up to Solebury Orchards. The other day I stopped for lunch for the first time at Dilly's Corner a few miles north of New Hope near the bridge over to Stockton. Excellent burgers.
