Pinched the 16" bar in my 170 this afternoon. Sprocket tip wont spin. Can this be fixed myself or is it history. No experience working a little saw with a thin bar so valuable lesson learned.
Maybe the outer bar laminations got bent in at the tip when it got pinched. Examine the sprocket tip closely and see if there is any bent portions between the teeth of the sprocket tip and if so pry it back apart gently till the tip can turn again. Then oil it up good and see if the chain runs true. You may want to look at the groove of the bar all the way around. Do you have one of the stihl groove cleaners / raker depth guages?
Nope no hope for it! Scrap it too and get two huskies. They cut so fast they don’t have time to get pinched. Seriously though, it’s a good thing you stocked up on saws earlier, you’ve been kinda hard on them lately
The saw is new as of April and doesnt have a lot of hours on it. Barely broken in. With the recent tropical storm ive picked up a lot of work where im running 2-3 different saws and the 170 is great for limbing. Didnt like it at first with the lightweight, but more use has got me to love it for what it is. It was late and i got lax using it hence the pinch. Didnt have time to check it tonight and will maybe tomorrow. The 261 has filled in and i have yet to use the new 194T so may give that some time.
Very true. The 361 wouldnt start yesterday too. Put a new plug in today and it solved the problem. Nice to have multiple saws on site/job. We do like our saws dont we!
One of the neighbors had the same problem and he brought his saw over for me to look at it. The brake had gotten tripped on. He never used the chain brake and had never had it trip before. So much for reading the manual... LOL
I use the brake constantly. Firdy=t time i ised my 028 back in 2985 it fell out of the tractor s trailer. I couldnt get it to go. Brought saw home told my uncle who then disengages the brake laughing at me.
Take your scrench and pry the tip open. Not sure if you can straighten the sprocket if it got bent during the process. New bar is probably only $35 or so
When I have had a problem with the front sprocket on a bar, I will remove the chain and put the tip of the bar on a flat piece of wood and see if I can get the sprocket to turn by having the teeth of the sprocket bit into the wood. There could be something jammed in there that you may be able to force out.
Pulled the bar off last night and checked the tip carefully. Not pinched, sprocket tip turned okay, maybe a bit of sawdust jammed. Turns out the saw had jumped the spur drive sprocket somehow. Thanks for the tip Erik B Ive done that in the past and didnt think of it at the time. Didnt have my readers either so couldnt see it clear enough.
