Anybody know what kind of bait works good to lure the lil buggers in?
I've been seeing a chipmunk around lately, kinda figured it was more than 1, confirmed that tonight. One out on the kitchen windowsill (I swear I seen him stick his tongue out at me! :p) Then 1 went up the opposite side of the house right outside the window where my recliner is (while I was on FHC no less!)
So I go out to check my box trap, that's when I noticed a new hole chewed through the garage siding! :jaw: I walked around the garage and while admiring the wood pile(s) (yup, I'm all tore up with the FAD) that's when I see a 3rd chippy, sittin on top of an unsplit round eating a mulberry. :hair:
Still nothing in the trap, apparently these weirdos don't like peanut butter! Help, their taking oveeeeeeer!
Anybody have a Tasmanian devil-cat they wanna rent out?! :handshake:

I have been using a baited cage trap for years and have got over a hundred that way, but there has to
be better options. I personally am interested in poisoning the little buggers....

Come to think of it...your are right, I think the sentence for chewing a hole in the siding is...DEATH

Hmm, well, I have heard that rootbeer (or any pop) works on rats, they can't deal with the carbonation, basically blow up

Box trap meaning a full body trap or a live trap? Try corn or peanuts, any kind of grains, if you get a live trap and want it dead, drown, or put a 22 shell right between the eyes, I don't like poison, for many reasons, it's less humane slow nasty death, and on top of that the dang things seem to always die where you can't find and get rid of them properly leaving you wondering what stinks!

Are you sure it's the chipmunk doing the damage? We have dozens around our hunt camps and cottage and never had a problem with them. Now mice and red squirrels are a whole other story:hair:

No. Evidently, they have other things to get into. They do get into the garbage bin , but the real culprit in that is the rogue raccoon we have.
Might have to camp out there and give him a little surprise.

    Peanut butter!

Smear a little on the plate that trips the door, and they will come running to it. The problem is, squirrel's like it as well. There is nothing funnier than a pizzed off fat grey squirrel in a small little chipmunk live trap.

If you are done messing with the little buggers, you can make a chipmunk jacuzzi. For this you need a 3-5gallon bucket with just over 5" of water in it. Throw a handful of sunflower seeds in it "enough to cover the water". Put a board up the side of it, and the will jump right in the bucket thinking it is just sunflower seeds and not be able to climb back out.

Rat traps! Old timer I knew that lived in a rural area had rat traps set all around his outbuildings. I thought he had a rat problem and asked what was up. He said they were for chipmunks cause they were so destructive. I use a peanut as bait and have to make sure birds dont see it, Ive caught a couple blue jays.

    Yeah, a live trap, a little one. It's only 3" x 3" x 10" long or so.

Yup. This is the second time they have moved in, and the second hole in the siding...must be tasty stuff!

That's what I thought too, everybody likes PB, right? Hasn't worked on these guys! The ants seem to like it though!

We have one of those too, but the only thing he really seems to get into, other than just knocking stuff over sometimes, is the birdfeeder. I was racking up this next winters firewood recently (I"ll hafta post about my system sometime soon) and I found where the racoon (s?) left me a few "additions" of his own to the pile. Fortunately it was old, and dry...looked like they had been eatin plenty of berries too. I just knocked it off before I racked the wood, probably should have left it, additional BTUs, right!? :loco:  :D Hey, they burn cow chips I hear!

I catch them all the time. Bought a bag of critter feed at the store. It's a mix of corn and in the shell peanuts. Also sunflower seeds. Works well. I have to weigh the trap down or else they will push the trap around to get to the seeds that fall through. Make sure the trap trigger isn't rusted or it may not work. With all this rain mine was rusted and I got cleaned out a time or two before I realized why.

Sunflower seeds work well for me. We usually get at least one every summer and I need to get them before they start breeding. Got one out there right now that I'm working on and his days are numbered. If I didn't keep them under control, we'd be overrun.
Strawberries would make good bait too. If you have a strawberry patch, they'll take every ripe strawberry, before you have a chance to get them.
